Madonna's next major project: a musical?

What's Madonna gonna do next? The rumors are flying.According to some sources,Madonna is quietly working on a musical. Here's what we have heard so far...

***Madonna is currently writing and producing new songs for her upcoming musical. She is working with producers Pat Leonard,Joe Henry and Mirwais (he was said to be in LA in December, composing some tracks).Joe Henry is Madonna's brother in law and he co-wrote her 2001 hit "Don't Tell Me".In a recent interview with the British magazine HUMO,he confirms that "Right now we're writing songs for a musical. It's about the era of the silent movie".Which brings us to our next rumor...

***The storyline is about a female jazz singer and the film takes place in the 1920s (similiar to "Evita"?)

***The working title is "Hello Suckas".

***Madonna is rumored to be taking ballet(!) classes again,in order to prepare for this role. She will be playing a 1920s vandeville-like tap dancing star.

Not sure what to make of this information. There has been no official confirmation from Madonna's camp, but she has mentioned plans for a musical that she wrote herself. One of the participants (Joe Henry) has confirmed in an interveiw that he is co-writing songs with Madonna for this project,so it's obviously not just a rumor anymore. Also,Madonna usually does a movie every other year (when she's between albums),so there's no reason to believe that 2004 will be any different.

Whatever the case,I agree with what a fan posted on a Madonna forum...

"Whatever it is,I really hope she pours her heart and soul into it.She really needs to honor her craft this time. She really can't afford anymore bad films".

I agree with the fan posting as well, though, she CAN'T afford another flop of a film...I'll keep my fingers crossed

I know. Mirwais again. She must hate us! Pat Lenoard though. Hmmm... I love those eighties songs but the stuff she did with him on ROL was nothing great ("The Power of Goodbye" and...not sure) Did something happen with her and Steve Bray? Bring him back!

I don't think she will ever bring Steve Bray back.He took a bunch of early demos they recorded and released them on CD ("Pre-Madonna" and "In The Beginning") without her consent.

If the film really takes place in the 20s,the music will have to be jazzy with a fair amount of torch ballads. That might be interesting.

That's right. Damn you, Bray! But some of those songs were good though. I just think that is the reunion that would rock. Some of her best dane stuff is from him.

I hear you.Something tells me that Madonna should just chill for awhile.Don't release anything in 2004.Come back in 2005 with a kickass new CD and tour.

But then again, this new musical could be another 'Evita' for her.It certainly sounds like an intriguing project, and the soundtrack could be a bold new sound for her (Madonna doing jazz?).So I guess for now,I'll keep an open mind.Hopefully,if the movie plans fall through, some of these songs could be salvaged for her next album.
