Janet's new single - download now. from janet-xone.com.
Remember the "it's like Janet's Dirty Mind" stuff? Well, uhm, it's ever so slightly When U Were Mine-ish. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm a sucker for a major chord

HOLY SHIT!!!
It does sound very "When You Were Min"-ish...but I really like it. It reminds me of the 'Funk-a-billy" stuff Prince did in 80-81 ("Gotta Stop Messin About", "Jack U Off", "Bite The Beat") and also Blondie ("X-Offender")!! Especially with that organ/keyboard during the hook line! I like this direction she's taken. It's a really catchy tune! bring on the LOVE or HATE....!!! peace [This message was edited Wed Jan 28 10:11:37 PST 2004 by VANITYSprisonBYTCH] Every minute of last night is on my face today....

WTF is this crap?
It sounds like a fucking Mentos commercial. Must go listen to Rhythm Nation and The Velvet Rope to remember why I like her. [This message was edited Wed Jan 28 10:24:08 PST 2004 by VoicesCarry]

Regards Avril ps: please... don't tell anybody Yeah, it does sounds like she decided "hey, wouldn't it be cool if I started my own teenage garage band." Tremendously repetitive and really grating after a while. Whatever the fuck this is, though, it sure as hell ain't single material. Not even filler material, by her standards. I really hate to say it, but "Me Against The Music" is infinitely preferable to this. [This message was edited Wed Jan 28 10:34:28 PST 2004 by VoicesCarry]

None of you have any taste. This is a fun and funky song, what she supposed to do ANOTHER If or Nasty??? I think it's a step in the right direction. You people crack me up, just because her producer says "it's her Dirty Mind" people think the songs are going to SOUND like the Dirty Mind album, it's the STATEMENT people. It's Janet Jackson here people, not Joni Mitchell so I don't know WHAT you were expecting

I don't know - a good, catchy, fun song, maybe? If you think this is funky, as another poster commented, you must consider Avril Lavigne the queen of funk.

Gee...what mood are YOU in that you don't hear a fun catchy song here?? Funk is a lot of things, doesn't have to be one thing all the time, so maybe you should fine tune that sarcasm a bit.

The song is still "lacking" (I'll phrase that nicely), esp. considering that Janet is supposed to be at or near the top of the pop/R&B crowd. IMHO, it's something on par with Mariah Carey's disastrous "Loverboy" single. It sounds about 4 years too late.

I haven't even read the comments posted here, just so I can hear it first for myself without any initial reactions.
I must say... I LOVE ITTT! Love the rocky, poppy, feel-good, retro, early 80s feel to it. This is my winter jam. The bridge is cool. I can hear the Prince influences in it. It sounds like he's in it during some parts. Especially the "ooh, ooh, ooh" part. Thanks for giving me the head's up.

I like it. And I like the fact that it sounds different from most of her previous work. Should silence the people who claim that Janet can't make an album these days that doesn't sound like "Janet".
Definitely reminds of "When You Were Mine."

I think it's decent. Definitely can't be accused of sounding like the previous albums. I don't understand the Avril comparisons at all. Keep in mind folks that hearing a song for the first time on a computer will never do it for you. You have to hear songs on a proper stereo to fully appreciate them.

Same here. I like it also. She cant keep doing the same thumptin beat, followed by a sample thing all the time. Aint that's y u guys didnt like "All 4 U" that much? This is refreshing 4 her. I like it alot. If i was her producer i wouldve changed the snares or drum beat a little to thump a little more, but it is good. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Worse than Son Of A Gun  Hey, compared to this bit of second hand toilet paper, "Son of a Gun" was her "River Deep, Mountain High". The new single is lifeless, joyless and utterly turgid. This is the same person who gave the world "When I Think Of You", "That's The Way Love Goes" and "Someone To Call My Lover" for God's sake! Her taste in pre-album singles has been impeccable. Does not bode well for the album. [This message was edited Wed Jan 28 11:54:53 PST 2004 by JohnnyTheFox]

you know, its a double edged sword and people just can't win. if she made another typical 'janet' styled song, people would say she's repetitive and untalented and doesn't have any range, etc., etc., etc.. now, she's done something different (for her) and people are complaining about that. its just like when sade released lover's rock and critics said if you have one sade album you don't need to buy this one...they're all the same. when artists branch out they are slammed. when they stick with one style they are slammed. there ain't no winnin' with some of y'all.

Janet can do an R&B-oriented first single... get slammed. Janet can do a dance-oriented first single... get slammed. Janet can do a polka-oriented first single... get slammed. Every artist gets slammed some way or another: "she's not doing this," "she needs to do that," yadda, yah. Basically, everybody can think what they want about this single because everybody has their opinions. I can't knock anybody if they don't feel it the way I do, etc. It's special to me, may not be special to another cat. That's the way the music game is. Deal.

I've had this song on repeat for the last two hours. I LOVE Janet, & am SO looking forward to her new album, but this song has not blown me away, it will not be one of favorites at all. I keep thinking that it sounds very pre-Control; like it is a Dream Street B-side.
I keep listening to it, hoping I will like it more, but so far, no luck.

Not bad at all. Not earth-shattering either though.
It is reminiscent of 'When U were Mine', but i can't envisage me playing it in 24 years time though.

I don't have a problem with her changing styles, and that's not my issue with this song. I do have a problem with her releasing shitty music, though (and I certainly think this is shitty music). If she did same old same old again - but did it well - I'd say "hey, it's great". Janet's a pop star, I don't turn to her for my musical innovation.
Now, when I first heard this song, I hated it. Because I hold Janet to such high standards when it comes to initial singles, and I was hoping for something good after the inept "All For You" album (2 good singles and some filler). So I waited about an hour, then played it again until I got sick of it (quickly). This is not a grower for me. I still hated it. To me, this single is the worst type of mediocre. It sounds like something Lumidee might want to cut. She has always had impeccable taste in choosing lead-off singles for albums. If this is one of the best things on the record, then I'm not buying it (and that would be a first for a Janet album with me). I don't believe that radio will embrace this single, and if this is a harbinger of overall quality, we could see Janet's "American Life" saleswise. Well, if that's your opinion on the song, fine. But that doesn't make it "shitty." And to be honest, if we're comparing lead-off singles, I prefer this song to "All for You". That song was just by the numbers, this one at least sounds different.
And it's certainly better than "Got 'till it's Gone". That single initially hurt The Velvet Rope album.
