NEW WAVE FANS - please help me with project

well I just bought the 4-disc box set dedicated to Punk called NO THANKS put out by Rhino... it's fantastic. It sounds great and the liner notes are really interesting.

Then I wondered if there would ever be a New Wave version done... and if so, what might be on it.

So now I want to put together a hypothetica. New Wave 4-CD box set... 20 songs each disc, so 80 total songs. What would be on it?

Everyone give me 4 ESSENTIAL New Wave songs to make the Box Set. Time-frames: 1980 to 1984. I think after 84, what we consider "new wave" had morphed into something else... 4 songs a post - can come back for 4 more after a few susequent posts have been made. And once we get to 80, the track list will be finished... and my goal is actually find all the songs and put together the ultimate New Wave box set...

Anyway. I'm going to start out with my 1st 4 essential tracks:

1. Never Say Never - Romeo Void
2. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
3. Boys Don't Cry - The Cure
4. Love is a Stranger - Eurythmics

That is an excellent series. Another is 'New Wave Hits of the 80's - Just Can't Get Enough'. There's about 16 volumes in that series. But if you were trying to do it yourself, just to mix it up, here's some vital entries IMO. And mind you, I've omitted the obvious ones...

'Love Action' - Human League
'Up All Night' - Boomtown Rats
'Diggin' Your Scene' - Blow Monkeys
'Don't Tell Me' - Blancmange
'Smalltown Boy' - Bronski Beat
'You Spin Me Round' - Dead Or Alive
'Europa & The Pirate Twins' - Thomas Dolby
'Games Without Frontiers' - Peter Gabriel
'Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream)' - Icicle Works\
'It Ain't What You Do' - Fun Boy Three
'One Step Beyond' - Madness
'When The Lights Go Out' - Naked Eyes
'Private Life' - Oingo Boingo
'A Million Miles Away' - The Plimsouls
'All The Things She Said' - Simple Minds
'The Love Parade' - The Dream Academy
'Breakin' Us In Two' - Joe Jackson
'What Is Love' - Howard Jones
'Wouldn't It Be Good' - Nik Kershaw
'China' - Red Rockers
'Avalon' - Roxy Music
'Cities In Dust' - Siouxsie & The Banshees
'Dirty Creature' - Split Enz
'Don't Box Me In' - Stan Ridgway & Stewart Copeland
'Girlfriend Is Better' - Talking Heads
'Wonderland' - Big Country
'Absolute Beginners' - David Bowie
'Reap The Wild Wind' - Ultravox
'Locomotion' - OMD
'Tears Are Not Enough' - ABC
'Chant No. 9' - Spandau Ballet
'Ghosts' - Japan
'If You Were Here' - Thompson Twins
'Hang On Now' - Kajagoogoo

hmmm Hmm...Does it have to be just 4? I mean, I can come up with a billion. But I'll give you 2 obscure ones and 2 popular ones.

1) Hungry Like The Wolf - Duran Duran
2) I Ran - A Flock Of Seagulls
3) Cities in Dust - Siouxie & The Banshees
4) Oblivious - Aztec Camera

I should get out my long list of New Wave tracks that I burned. smile

Actually, it's Chant No. 1 (I don't need this pressure on), by Spandau. And, yes, that is a groovy tune. wink

You've come up with a whole lot of good ones here too, Violator. We gotta hang out sometime. smile

And I noticed that you allowed for repeats artists, like Depeche Mode on your first disc.

Do you want to keep it one song per artist or are you open to any suggestions?

i think some artists merit several cuts over the span of a box set. the No Thanks box set has 3 or 4 from some artists... so i think that's cool. probably should try to limit to one per disc, or at maximum 2 per disc.
