Bobby Byrd

The voice response to James Brown on "Sex Machine" and just one FUNKY musician in everything I've heard.

Heard anything live by this man?

yeah, that guy is waaayyy too funky. he got co-writing credits on Sexmachine if I remember correctly. don't know if he's still touring or making records these days.

I've seen him live twice in '95 and '98 together with the JB All Stars, lots of peeps from the early 70tees James Brown camp there. funky and sweaty evening! I have the tour on vinyl, don't know if it had an US release too.

btw, Bobby Byrd was also the first prominent "victim" of sampling going to court against Eric B & Rakim, this bringing him back into limelight, touring & recordmaking again, and thank god also resulting in re-releases of all those old funk gems. recommendation: anybody who doesen't already own those "James Brown's Funky People" collections that were issued somewhere around '88 should try to get his hands on this. Essential!

I've seen Bobby Bird live in -- what? 1992 or something. He was touring with JB ppl.

Vicky Anderson (of JB fame) was there and - amazingly enough - so was her daughter: Carleen Anderson (who was spearheading the Acid Jazz scene at the time with her band the Young Disciples). They did a couple of songs from the YD's album, which nobody had expected!

The whole concert was great but short because not a lot of people had shown up sad

yep, carleen & vickie anderson, young disciples songs... seems 2 me it was the same tour I saw (the Young Disciples CD came out in '93). VERY few people at my first gig also, it was a shame! Bobby even told at the end we should bring all of our friends with us the next time he stops by rolleyes and surprisingly 2 me he DID came back to our town a few years after, and then it was kinda OK (well... not sold out but fair enuff anyway)

It's a little bit sad to see these great musicians grow old and lose their audience.

I liked the fact that Carleen was there as if to say:"These are our roots, this is were the music we play comes from". I'm amazed they didn't publicize her presence at the gig, because I think it would have attracted more ppl.

Myself, I got into a lot of 70's music through the acid jazz stuff, which was very derivative but, if you're curious enough, you end up finding the real source! And you realize it's even better!!

This is what I'm saying! It does suck to see greatness get old but I will always be in the audience.
