The Greatness Of Freddie Hubbard

This man's music has given me an immense amount of pleasure of the years.

I've been plugging Freddie here at the org a few times since I started hanging here...In his prime, he was the toughest trumpet player EVER IMO!!! He just never run dry of ideas when he solos on his instrument. His improvisational chops were impeccable in his hey day. Yes, I even think he's tougher than Miles, even though philosophically him and Miles are different. Miles didn't believe in cluttering space with a lot of chords and notes, Hubbard does. However, versatility have shown him using space well. The two are also different in their approach to the trumpet. But Freddie is not only tough on his instrument, he is also an excellent composer. Some of his greatest albums are out of print though...Seek out...

Keep Your Soul Together {1973)
Life Flight{1987}
CTI All Stars -The California Concert At Hollywood
Palladium 1971 {1971}

In print is

Red Clay
First Light
Open Sesame
Hub-Tones
Sky Dive

Check out some of his stuff. I think you'll like it. One of his signature songs, Red Clay has been sampled several times within the hip-hop community.

Tribe Called Quest sampled the keyboard riff played by Herbie Hancock on Freddie Hubbard's original composition of Red Clay .

I agree with you.He seems to be underrated.I love his albums .I just recieved a box of imports($) yesterday,including:

Ready For Freddie
Polar AC
The Body & The Soul
Keystone Bop/Friday & Saturday

Im really partial to his CTI releases.RED CLAY is a classic album every jazz fan should have.STRAIGHT LIFE and FIRST LIGHT are great too.

He also appears on several 60s BlueNote LPs with other artists such as Herbie Hancock.

I have to step in and make a correction.
They didn't sample the version off of Freddie's album on which Herbie played keys.

Yeah Freddie Hubbard is the composer of the song "Red Clay"...but "Sucka Nigga" by A Tribe Called Quest used a cover version off of the 1973 Jack Wilkens debut album Windows.

I bought Freddie Hubbard's album thinking that was the version Tribe sampled but that's not it! And I should have had a closer look at Tribe's liner notes.

It says:
"Sucka Nigga" contains a sample of "Red Clay" written by F. Hubbard and performed by Jack Wilkens, courtesy of Hub-Tones Music (BMI) and Sony Music Entertainment.

Yeah...You're right as I have or had that Tribe Called Quest Midnight Maurauders...my bad. However, it is still Fred's composition and he arranged and structured the
song...There have many been a few covers of this song.
