The best modern rock band ever? Well, if you say so.

Personally, Siamese Dream was the the best cd and it all went down hill from there. Ego trippin' I guess

Ego was their (ne, Billy's) only flaw. When Mellon Collie came out, I hated it... but after revisiting it a few years back, it really is good. The last official release, "Machina", was amazing and very underrated.

They're pretty good and I love "1979" and "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" , but not the greatest modern rock band by far. I can name many more that are so much better, including Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, Ramones, U2, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Dave Matthews Band.

Obviously you haven't seen them live. They're amazing. I have, however, seen Smashing Pumpkins live, and I wasn't impressed. They were mediocre.

I was just thinking the other day how The Smashing Pumpkins would probably get back together in the near future. The demand for a reunion would have them seeing dollar signs too big to ignore.

They were an amazing band. Melancholy was worth buying just for Bullet With Butterfly Wings and Zero.

I used to LOVE this band when I was in high school and every now and then I revisit Gish, Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie. Even Picese Iscariot is decent. It would be nice for them to get back together even though they aren't the greatest live.

oh yeah, Dave Matthew's Band better than the Pumpkins? I don't think so. Too mediocore.

Yeah, well, a live performance speaks a lot about a band. Even if you don't like their style, they're amazing musicians.

The Dave Matthews Band is so boring that it's amazing how nauseous they make me feel. I'd LOOOVE to see a battle of the bands between Dave Pussyboy Matthews and Billy I'llScreamUntilBabiesClawTheirEyesOut Corgan.

The Smashing Pumpkins are at the absolute top of the rock band list...and Zwan kicked some major ass too. Billy is one of the last true Guitar Rawk Gods.

Yeah, well, I've had the amazing misfortune of seeing them live on more than one occasion, and it was some of the most wasted hours of my life. Seriously, this music makes me want to start shoving hackey sacks up frat boys tight asses.

Mmmm...make those bitches moan...

Yeah, but it was one of the few examples of deserved
ego-trippin'

Their dubble album and the dozens of non album trax
they recorded in such a short time were astounding.

Sure, not all of them were brilliant, but overall, it
was one of the best bands of the last decade.

Corgan's poetry was extremely good in places, just a
shame it was watered down with so much drivel which
was obviously only written to connect with depressed
teenagers.

One of the things I love about the Pumpkins is that they were so versatile (much like Prince). They cold play the hardest of the hard rock (Tales of a Scorched Earth, Mellon Collie double LP) and the softest of the soft melodies (Disarm, Mayonaisse etc.). And their obscure b-sides and outtakes are amazing. Often very psychadelic.

I've seem then three times in concert and each time they blew my mind. And my nose. headbang

I wouldn't say the best ever but certaintly one of the best. I really miss them. I would say that the Pixies were better. I would love to hear them reunite right now on a new disc. I heard they might tour.

They were like the Talking Heads of Alternative/Modern Rock band. Pretty cool stuff.

Billy Corgan had some good potential with Zwan, but then he just broke them up. They had a radically different vibe than the Pumpkins. And you know what, that's where Billy's heart was, which was the reason why he split up Zwan.

Yeah, they're good and versatile, but their hard-rock material is done better by others, as well as their softer stuff. If you're talking about versatile artists who do it better, Pearl Jam and STP can run circles around the Smashing Pumpkins.

I don't think you understand what I'm talking about when I say "hard rock." I mean good, hard, heavy, REAL rock music.

STP are a pop band and they were good, but by no means great. Pearl Jam SUCKS ASS.

And I have seen Dave Matthews Band live in concert. It's monotanous and hippie. They are nice people, but their music is pretty lame and in no way qualifies as rock.

Obviously you aren't familiar with STP or Pearl Jam's music, and just go by what you hear on mainstream radio. STP is a rock band, not pop and do it better than Smashing Pumpkins. Everything about them is better.

I'm MOST UNFORTUNATELY familiar with Stone Temple Highlots and FUCKING PEARL JAM??!! You're kidding...RIGHT?!

Are you my roommate from my second year in college...I think it was '94? Roy, is that you?? TURN OFF THAT GODDAMN PEARL JAM ALREADY, IT'S MAKING ME WANT TO PEEL OFF MY SKIN.

smile

Seriously though, STP and Pearl Jam and Dave Matthews all rank (in MY totally menaingless opinion) among the absolute worst of all the thousands of sucky bands out there. Smashing Pumkpins and YES the Pixies, on the other hand, are fucking artistic legends. Some people always go for the bigger sellers, I guess.

It's nothing to do with a bigger seller. In fact, STP and Pearl Jam are far less commercial than the Pumpkins. They're just better bands, and Eddie Vedder and Scott Weiland are better frontmen than Billy No-Personality Corgan. Eddie has a much better voice, and Scott is much more entertaining.

the Pumpkins were a great band. They made some really cool videos too, check out their DVD, its alot of fun.

They really had an awesome sound on Gish, Iscariot, and Siamese. There was a sense of optimism and enthusiasm buried underneath all the rage. Unfortuneatly that was totally missing on Adore and Machina, but there's still some great tracks on both those albums.

Mellon Collie is alot like what SOTT was to Prince. It's almost like listening to 2 or 3 seperate albums mixed together.

Their singles collection is great as well. Alot of great hard rock and instrumentals.

Not to add to the argument or anything. STP were totally derivative. If they didn't have such a charismatic frontman, there would be nothing interesting there. Pearl Jam basically found their groove on the first album and didn't evolve much after that. They're basically glorified classic rock. The Pumpkins on the other hand, like them or not, were very unique. They're an art rock band, which is decidedly less commercial than the other 2 bands in question. Billy Corgan is an amazing guitarist and songwriter, the true creative force behind the band. With the other two, there is no centralized source. Jimmy Chamberlain is one of the best drummers going. James Iha and D'arcy just add to the fabulousness, androgyny and showmanship. They could do grunge, classic rock, prog, new wave, ambient, acoustic ballads, electronic and heavy metal. You may not like Billy Corgan or his voice, but he's able to convey a huge range of emotions with it. He can sound like a totally innocent young boy or a possessed witch in the same song. Nirvana gets all the credit for sparking alternative music. But The Pumpkins gave it a lasting artistry that will keep people coming back to the era long after they broke up.
