STRAYS is NOT up to par with Ritual or Nothing's Shocking, and I'm not alone on that opinion. All respectable journalists agree that it's crap or atleast marginally worse than their 80's stuff. I have seen Jane's live twice, both times at the beginning of 2003 before Strays was released, and when they played the new shit live it paled desperately next to their old stuff.
Perry's still rockin' and rollin', but Dave *has* sold out. Working with P-Diddy and Xtina is inexcusable, it wasn't to "broaden his horizons", it was to please Carmen as well as out of sheer vanity. I was an ardent Dave fan for years. But now he's just an opportunistic arena rocker with a discoloured alfalfa-sprout beard, and it aint a good look. Viva vintage Jane's!!

sell out or no sell out. He's making cheddar. If Dave's a sell out then in Redman's words "I'll be that". All their core fans are 30 something suburbanites anyway.

LOL 30+ suburbanites!! Old-skooler's rock! I'm only 18 but yeah, I see your point..and I agree that Dave sold out with "One Hot Minute", but it's still a cool CD, I own it and play it plenty. The chemistry was wierd but that's what makes the record unique I guess...and as for Dave making cheddar, good for him...but he already had loot, and he's an unstable man so he's bound to go mad one of these days if he hasn't already.

Oh man, y'all got to be kidding me! Dave's a MUSICIAN! That's why he's played on all those different albums from Xtina to P.Diddy, etc. I think that's 10 times better than a guy who only plays in the confines of whatever band he's in. Dave's already a great guitarist but he's that much better because he goes out on a limb and does other things. "One Hot Minute" was the best album the Chili Peppers released! For once they put out something that wasn't some half baked funk album or crappy uninspired rock made by guys way past their prime. Dave breathed some life into that band. I will admit that Strays isn't up to par with their past work, but at the same time, these guys hadn't really written any new material in years and I think it's better than them just trying to put out another album that sounds basically the same as their old shit. To each his own I guess.

Dave also played on Alanis' 'You Oughta Know'...so did Flea!
Looks like he is a better session-musician than a member of a band (other than Jane's Addiction)! [This message was edited Thu Jan 22 7:12:32 PST 2004 by abierman]

Yeah, what the hell happened to Dave's beard? It used to look all nice and sexy and now it looks like it could use a trim and some oil sheen. Did it change color or did he just stop coloring it black?
But back to the topic... Old Jane's Addiction is best, none of their new stuff moves me at all. It's almost like the fire's gone out. One Hot Minute is the only RHCP CD that I own or even want to own. It was sad that Dave couldn't stay with them because I really love the music that came out of that. I find everything else by them to be just okay. As far as Dave playing for Diddy and Alanis...pfft. Whatever. I feel like he gave their songs some added spice. I'm not about to call the sellout police on him.

I have to say though, he seems like a really nice guy.. very "real" and down to earth! [This message was edited Thu Jan 22 9:57:22 PST 2004 by BabyCakes] The day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom - Anais Nin

how ironic that people on a prince website criticize someone for selling out- the same people who say "fuck warner brothers" for what they did to prince. he sold out- and then got mad because he didn't make the same quality music as before, and thusly, sold less. so yeah, "fuck warner brothers" and "fuck dave navarro". how funny. now i know what this is all about. now i know exactly what i am.

I don't have beef with the fact that Dave branched out and lent his skill to Xtina and P.Diddy, it wouldn't have mattered if he did it on his own terms, but he used to say all this stuff about "despising funk music" because it was happy and he's "never felt that way in his entire life." Considering what happened to Dave's mother and what Dave's endured in his romantic relationships, it just seems a bit strange and wrong that he should transform instantly just because a DDcup woman should look his way.
Dave's done some great work and IS an amazing guitarist. His unreleased album "Rainbows and Unicorns" is the most achingly personal work I've ever heard in my life. It's like nothing you've ever heard before. "Trust No One" is shit compared to it, as is Strays compared with any vintage Jane's or even O.H.M (I agree that the Peppers are just average apart from that album.) It's cool if Dave wants to be "happy" now, but it's just a bit pathetic that it took a Baywatch reject to make him so.

Sure Stays isn't a crucial album like Ritual or nothing'shocking were but it 's still very good...Being a big Jane's fan I was a bit disappointed at the first listen but then it grew on me. After such a long break it really could have been much worse...
Yeah Dave has sold out... to see someone who has contributed to write the soundtrack of our life in a mariah carey video was heartbreaking. More generally it's obvious that he is now more interested in posing than in making edgy music. sad sad sad... I just hope perry's gonna put him back on the right track for the next album.
