The best (& it's independent) record label in the world...

...has to be Ninja Tune. It was founded by Coldcut after their record label difficulties. It's gone on to become worldwide and to constantly release exciting challenging new music.

Now, after over 10 years, they've finaly done a retrospective. There's a double CD of classics, a double CD of remixes and a double-capacity DVD of videos with goodies added on.

If you like hip-hop, jazz, ambient, techno, downbeat, weird shit or all of the above, you should love Ninja.

Shout if you love Ninja!
Ninja Website - free MP3s...r goodies!

Am I the only Ninja-lover here? Surely not! Just add a reply even if just to say 'ay'. All the retrospecive stuff is out on January 26th and it is all awesome. I've had the DVD on all evening. You'd be shitting-yourself-crazy not to get it.

I have some compilation thats like "the shadow years" and its all very sample-based and awesome.

I had no idea that they had any music videos to compile. The visuals must be pretty artsy/good?

Oh yeah. It's mostly recent stuff as a lot of their early videos were a bit pooptoast but nearly all 35 videos on it are great. There's also a 15 minute video mash-up by Hexstatic who has also kindly provided a nearly 1hour long audio mix too. You can watch the vids in the pre-arranged order or by random order, chronological order or reverse-chronological order. There's also the album covers option where you get to watch a gallery of all their albums covers whilst a beautifuly remastered version of "Autumn Leaves (Irresitible Force mix)" plays. They've juiced it's sound up for DVD making even this feature very tasty. I bet there's some Easter Eggs too but I'm shite at finding them.

Hmmm. I'll try and find out for you. As they're doing a big retrospective, surely they will?

Oh, and that Blockhead track is great! So's the video on that DVD!

Chill! NTSC DVD of "Zen TV" is out on February 9th.

Can't you play PAL? I bought "ONA Alladin Las Vegas" Region 0 NTSC and it was fine. Over here, all TV sets can play NTSC now because of the popularity of multi-region DVD players. Mind you, my telly is over 10 years old and it can still do the old NTSC. Isn't "Man With The Movie Camera" region free or is it region 2 only?

I have the coldcut/hextatic video, with the Timber track on it! I remember seeing that vid whilst completely stoned at V99, and then for a year I searched the web knowing that the track sponsored greenpeace (or was it friends of the earth?), and EVENTUALLY found the artist/got the vid!
jerkoff.....drool BULLSEYE! cool

Oh that's on there too. My favourites are probably Amon Tobin "Verbal" & "Four Ton Mantis", The Pointer Sisters "Pinball Number Count (DJ Food re-edit)" and the Mr Scruff videos.

DJ Food has re-edited all the Pointer Sisters pinball number counts from Sessame Street into one full length track and the video does the same for the shows freaky pinball animations.

Kid Koala also has some wicked vids.

I believe his first album was for Pressue Records (which I think was a label set-up by the late Rob Gretton of Factory Records/Hacienda/24 Hour Party People fame) but I've never seen it on sale.

Then Ninja signed him up and released his second album "Keep It Unreal" (featuring "Get A Move On") and last year's follow-up "Trouser Jazz".

He's got a new website, check http://www.mrscruff.com

Another great independent label is Psychopathic Records in Detroit. Yes, the Insane Clown Posse's label...You can't argue with success--these boys started with nothing and created one of the MOST successful rap labels in the business.

I got MAD CLOWN LOVE for Psychopathic...and I don't who knows. Bitch.

Peanut Butter Wolf's Badmeaningood is what I've been playing lately. Joe Jackson "Steppin' Out" segues into Cold Crush Brothers "Punk Rock Rap".

A genius mixing moment. And PBW in a Ninja thread is cool, he remixes The Herbaliser 'The Blend', if I remember rightly?
