I understand your point, but I think you're making a mistake in taking Bono seriously. Traipsing around the globe in wraparound blue shades trying to save starving children is alright, but jetting into Canada, endorsing the Liberal party for a few hours (including photo ops with the omnipresent blue shades), then jetting out again is a bit much. The Onion did a great parody of him: "'Save Us, Bono', cry world's starving children"
Another infographic: Called "rock's conscience," U2 frontman and political crusader Bono has met with everyone from Kofi Annan to Colin Powell. What has he been doing recently? • Tirelessly dedicating self to ending Third World debt, no matter how many magazine covers he must appear on in process • Restoring humanity's faith in the power and the promise and the possibility of rock and roll • Feeding starving Somalis by dividing single loaf into many • Defeating Bruce Springsteen in epic, five-hour earnest-off • Vowing to lobby Congress for African aid on progressively larger Jumbotrons until demands are met • Shouldering the burdens of a post-Sept. 11 world/Buying another pair of blue-tinted wrap-around shades • Revealing that The Edge will betray him three times before cock crows • Thinking about writing song about deliverance and redemption; also maybe one more about transcendence [This message was edited Thu Jan 8 20:09:49 PST 2004 by VoicesCarry]

I agree that they shouldn't use the halftime of the NFL to let some rock star get on a soapbox. The NFL halftime is always sucky and totally contrived, but it'd be even worse if they started talking about AIDS and such during it. It is supposed to be entertainment.
I hope that Prince never performs during the Super Bowl halftime...it is the ULTIMATE SELLOUT. I think Sting did it last year or the year before and I lost most all respect for him at that point. [This message was edited Thu Jan 8 20:40:16 PST 2004 by TonyC]

The Superbowl halftime is supposed to be fun and entertaining, and U2 performed 2 years ago. Bono is a big star and doesn't need the Superbowl as his platform. He can support AIDS in other ways if he wishes to do so. Bono, by the way, is not God.
Personally, I can't wait to see Janet perform this year. I think it will be absolutely amazing. Selling out? It's performing on one of the biggest stages, and that's what entertainment is all about.

hopefully Janet will not do a brother Michael impression at the Super Bowl. In 1993 in Pasadena (Super Bowl 27 Dallas Cowboys vs. Buffalo Bills) MJ performed at halftime.
But it was very weird when he popped up from under the stage, he just stood there in a pose for like THREE MINUTES before he started singing.

I understand all your points and, yes,it is easy to make fun of Bono or Sting for their activities, but I can't see how 5 minutes of his message would take away any fun. There is so much going on for the minds.I think it would still be fun.
You guys all must work for the nfl.I shoulda' known.J/K.Anyway,it's gonna be fun no matter what.I think I'll be okay as long as St Louis doesn't win. "I'm a pig..so,magic elixir I swill"

I can respect your opinion, but isn't Prince's agreeing to air his "Willing and Able" video on the Super Bowl XXVI pregame and postgame shows in 1992, when "Diamond and Pearls" was still being marketed, the "penultimate sellout"? I say that half-jokingly. But hey, Prince has already allowed footage from the classic SOTT movie to be used in car commercials, something he'd previously said he'd never do. So in a way, he has "sold out" before. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Again, how the hell is it "selling out". It's the ENTERTAINMENT industy. They are there to entertain.

I'm more mad at CBS. They were supposed to run a Peta ad and something else...I think it had to do with AIDS...but chickened out essentially. I saw a piece about it on CNN and the journalist reporting was so disgusted. "So much for any kind of conscience" or something like that

The last thing the promoters etc of the Superbowl want is something tied to AIDS as a major feature...read into that what you will. "Climb in my fur."
