Clapton, at least in the 60s and 70s was such a mellow cool, but very cool nonetheless. He couldn't be outcooled. There was just something about his approach at the time, both to his music, and his personality, that couldn't be outcooled. Unfortunately, since his kid's death he's gone all "elevator-music" on us, and reflecting on both musician's entire careers, Page becomes cooler.

But I got this Clapton CD, with a very simple title, it's called "Blues", and he plays some of his best stuff on it, it's got some really cool songs on it. I would put Clapton in the front, because his style is cleaner, and more versatile. That's just from what I've heard, and I have far more CDs with Clapton on them than with Page on them.

Slowhand has his moments, some very good moments as a matter of fact. But as "God" he's highly overrated. I remember the first time I heard the Bluesbreakers album with John Mayall, everybody was going on and on about this so-called great blues album. Pfffttt. Since Cream and Derek & The Dominoes Clapton's passion has waned - and that was the early '70s.

Since Zeppelin's demise Page hasn't been consistent either, but ... between his guest stints over the years, session career (where he started), and Zep itself, Jimmy's overall conceptual skills on guitar are more compelling.

In terms of style it's a bananas/watermelons comparison. The main thing they have in common is the Blues.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

But you know what, Clapton has a great blues style, but that's what he's maily rooted in. Whereas Pagey's style is more versatile. He has played blues as well as English folk, pop, rockabilly, funk, world, you name it. He's also very experimental with his craft. He used violin bows and incorporated otehr stringed instruments into his sound, like mandolins and stuff.

I think I have to go with Eric Clapton.
