Yeah, those rappers did break ground, but who out there has the lyrical prowess of Eminem nowadays? What rapper, black, white or green, has the tightest flows that could stir shit up like my man, Em? Oh yeah, Rage Against The Machine gets a shoutout too for breaking ground. Forget that whole Audioslave thing. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

With so many artists out there, it's tough to monitor them all... and SO easy to overlook the true would-be legends. There are some greats already mentioned here: Bjork, Beck, Andre 3000. I think some others include Joshua Redman, potentially Meshell Ndegeocello (she's starting to get a little redundant), Radiohead, Tricky, Dead Can Dance (I wish they would get back together)... there are tons. BJORK
KURT COBAIN D'ANGELO (in the sense that he sort of kicked off the 'neo soul' era of the mid-late '90s) OUTKAST (Hip Hop will never be the same!) RADIOHEAD (bring on the hate!) Potentials JACK WHITE M'SHELL NDEGEOCELLO RYAN ADAMS (Gave Country-Rock a kick in the ass and then changed his tune!) Every minute of last night is on my face today....

[/quote] Agreed, but D and Maxwell have this thing about consistancy.. they dont follow that.. their here about every 5 years or so.. just enough for people to forget what and who the heck they are.

(I just can´t think of others right now) really groundbreaking artists to come out in the last 15 years

Em's lyrics are only fascinating to the pop crowd. Chuck D's lyrics KILL Em on intelligence and subject matter alone. Em just whines and bitches about his family and makes fun of people. He HAS NO SUBSTANCE. I'll give him props for "Stan", but that's about it. Tell ya hwat; go...learn of some REAL hip hop artists, then start a thread and have this conversation. If Eminem was the best hip hop had to offer, I'd stop listening to it. Rage is cool. Those guys get props for lyrics, but they didn't START the hip hop/rock thing, they just popularized it on the underground scene.

ANI **FUCKING** DI FRANCO...
The mix of folk, funk and jazz. In your faces lyrics that, in my opinion, no one that I'm aware of has had the balls to even match. And let's not forget that she did it all without the help of glossy videos and big record company money. THIS IS THE "BEST" DESCRIPITION OF EM ... I'VE EVER HEARD !!!. why don't folks just admit that Em is NO MORE clever "Weird AL Yank-a-bitch" Actually , Weird Al's better. cause that's excatly who came to mind when I first saw Em ! If "Weird Al" wooda had Dre's cred & came all hard ? HE WOULD'VE HAVE BEEN THE WHITE RAPPING MESIAH !!. (plus, "Weird Al" IS a fine Musician... as well ) Yo, "Blaqueknight" U make a muhfucka wanna post !! let the "Hate" begin... "Who gon' clean up all deez Flowers" ----Eddie Murphy as mr. clarence

I agree with most posts (I might include Sigur Ros) but the real test (if we are are still alive) will be in 20 years.
Some artists will sound as fresh as when it came out and others will have that early 2000's sound.

If their next album suprasses "Elephant", I'm going to start comparing them to Nirvana. You know what? I have to agree. They are an example of "groundbreaking". Just drums and a guitar and a lead vocal. They are also the perfect example of different not being GOOD. They suck, but they are in a sense, groundbreaking.

OK I'm not going to dog Bjork, even though I have strong opinions about her. I can see a lot of people dig her. True innovation is creating a new sound. There is no denying that the likes of Aphex Twin, My Bloody Valentine, Talk Talk, and Portishead were very innovative when they first appeared in their respective era. Each one took influences from past groups and made something unique. But I'm having trouble thinking of anything to come out recently that is truely innovative. Maybe Sweet Trip's latest release. But Kid Rock? Sheryl Crow? Eminem? give me a break. All the gals say hoe if your man's giving up the gold. All the fellas say ruff if you're only giving up the bone.

Daft Punk. I agree they were not pioneers, but with their Homework, they made popular a sound that continues, and increasingly so, to influence today's music. I think they get waay to little credit. "It's better 2 B hated 4 what U R than 2 B loved 4 what U R not."

You should see them live, it's a great show. They are "groundbreaking" in the sense that they combine originality with talent... and their cd was the best release of 2003. Versatility is also a trademark of great music and they have alot of that. *********************************************************************************************
