obsessive phases

am i the only one who listens to music in obsessive phases? RIght now i'm smack in the middle of a Neil Young phase that won't let me go. I can listen to something else for a little while, but ultimately i'm drawn back into Neil.

Before that it was a semi-obsessive Tori Amos phase. Before that was The Cure. Radiohead coincided with the release of Hail to the Thief.

And i just realized that this is pretty much how I tend to listen to music... i get hooked on a particular artist and for a while I barely listen to anything else.

Does anyone else have this happen to them?

i am fully able to appreciate the obsessive phase thing. i usually have them when i have to work some mental shit out. and they tend to be with emotional women songwriters...tori amos, natalie merchant, sinead o' conner, tracy chapman, stevie nicks...you get the point. its funny, i either have my player on random or i have one particular artist on random for days or weeks (sometimes months).

My obsessive patterns don't last more than a week. I've already had a few mini obsess-athons this year where I played every album of the artist (I own) back-to-back.

Joy Division
Pharoah Sanders
Bjork
Madonna
Janet Jackson

For sure. I've got plenty of depressing music that I used to brood to, which I am now selling on Ebay. I've never understood people that are into ONE genre, for their whole life. I've been through a rap phase, then a rock phase, now I'm accepting the fact that I'm just naturally eclectic.

The bad thing about these phases is that you waste heaps of cash on CD's that you end up trashing anyway.

That's how I was all last year. I find it's the most rewarding listening, to not be distracted by anyone else. I learn the most about the artists I'm into and about music in general this way. I can trace all of last year by the phases I went through:

Jan-Feb: New Order
March-April: Annie Lennox
early summer: The Cure
late summer: Bowie
Fall until now: Tori Amos
now: full circle back into New Order

I have a friend just like you smile She has so many CDs there is nowhere to sit at her place!
I was a bit like that in the 90s, now I have a truckload of CDs I don't want anymore, and I wonder who'd want to buy this crap if I did put it on ebay. sad

This happens to me ALL the time! I go through phases where I only listen to one type of music,or a particular artist. This lasts for several weeks.Right now,I'm in a 70s soft rock phase.I've been listening to stuff like Carole King,Elton John,Dan Fogelberg, etc.By next week,I'll probably be back in my 70s funk phase again...lol..

I know all about this, I was stuck on a Radiohead loop for
more than 15 months lol.

I seem to be over that now. A bit. Recently I've been stuck
on Sinead. It all started with me re-discovering her silent
songs "This is a Rebel Song".

It just kept escalating from there on. I'm driving myself
absolutely mad with her music now heheheh.

I wouldn't dub it "obsessive," but I do have my moments where I'll repeatedly spin a certain tune, album or artist.

Last week, I was all into Tori Fixx.

Since Sunday, I've been completely engrossed in Neneh Cherry's atmospheric charmer "7 Seconds."

Winter/Spring 2003 - East Coast early/mid 90s Hip Hop (Queen La, Grand Puba, Nine, etc.), Tori Fixx's The Mochasutra
Summer 2003 - Dark/Progressive House and Club Mixes
Sept. 2003 - West Coast Rap
Oct/Nov 2003 - Janet Jackson Remixes and B-sides
Dec. 2003 - Indie/Underground Music (Houston Bernard, Da Silva, Jiva, Tori Fixx)

I wouldn't say "obsessive" but for a while I was on a Latin dance music and Chinese classical music kick. thumbs up!
