Teacher

I still do - The Cranberries

I'm not ready for this,
Though I thought I would be.
I can't see the future,
Though I thought I could see.

I don't want to leave you,
Even though I have to.
I don't want to love you.
Oh, I still do.

Need some time to find myself.
I wanna live within.

Can I go my own way?
Can I pray my own way?
I don't want to leave you.
Oh, I need you.

Am I ready for this?
Did I think I would be?
Can I see the future?
No, I can't see.

I don't want to leave you,
Even though I have to.
I don't want to love you.
Oh, I still do.

Why- Annie Lennox

TOTALLY! Man, I sang this to a girl once and we BOTH wound up crying...Annie's sad songs are just heart wrenching!

You know what song really gets me? That new Matchbox 20 song. I dont' know the name of it but I totally hear pieces of myself in both sides of the lyrics. It came on while I was in the car with a friend and I almost lost it.

"I, (Who Have Nothing)"

"I (Who Have Nothing)"

I, I who have nothing
I, I who have no one
Adore you, and want you so
I'm just a no one,
With nothing to give you but Oh
I Love You

He, He buys you diamonds
Bright, sparkling diamonds
But believe me, dear when I say,
That he can give you the world,
But he'll never love you the way
I Love You

He can take you anyplace he wants
To fancy clubs and restaurants
But I can only watch you with
My nose pressed up against the window pane
I, I who have nothing
I, I who have no one
Must watch you, go dancing by
Wrapped in the arms of somebody else
When darling it's I
Who Loves you

I Love You
I Love You
I Love You

My master list:

"Take A Bow" - Madonna
"Come Back To Me" - Janet Jackson

"Time (Clock Of The Heart)" - Culture Club

"Yellow" - Coldplay
"Mistake No. 3" - Culture Club
"When You Were Mine" - Prince/Cyndi Lauper versions
"Time After Time" - Cyndi Lauper
"Breakdown" - Donna Summer
"Don't Ask Me Why" - Eurythmics
"Here Comes The Rain Again" - Eurythmics (a song of yearning, but with a haunting, sad melody, if that qualifies)
"Seasons Change" - Exposé
"Dreams" - Fleetwood Mac
"Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" - Hall & Oates
"Say It Isn't So" - Hall & Oates
"She's Gone" - Hall & Oates
"Again" - Janet Jackson
"The Man That Got Away" - Judy Garland
"Cloudbusting" - Kate Bush (about love for a father)
"Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" - Kate Bush
"Millionaire" - Kelis (feat. Andre 3000) (a tale of wealth and lost love)
"Where Has The Love Gone" - Kylie Minogue (a curiously sparse dance track but haunting nonetheless)
"What Did I Do To You" - Lisa Stansfield
"When Are You Coming Back" - Lisa Stansfield
"All Around The World" - Lisa Stansfield
"Bad Girl" - Madonna ("Is it me or you that I'm afraid of/I tell myself I'll show you what I'm made of/ Can't bring myself to let you go/ Don't want to cause you any pain but I love you just the same/ In my heart I know we've come apart and I don't know where to start/ What can I do/ I don't wanna feel blue")
"Love Tried To Welcome Me" - Madonna
"Frozen" - Madonna
"The Power Of Goodbye" - Madonna
"I Don't Wanna Cry" - Mariah Carey
"Jimmy Mack" - Martha & The Vandellas (It's a Motown dance track, sure, but it's about the loss of a lover who perished in Vietnam; there's a kind of desperate longing to Martha's performance that drives it home, and we feel that he's dead but she's unwilling to accept it)
"You Beat Me To The Punch" - Mary Wells (sad until the role-switching final verse that is pure Smokey magic)
"My Smile Is Just A Frown (Turned Upside Down)" - Carolyn Crawford
"Blue Monday" - New Order (listen to the cryptic lyrics)
"Don't Speak" - No Doubt
"Everytime You Go Away" - Paul Young/Hall & Oates versions
"Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)" - Prince
"Purple Rain" - Prince (still makes me go "wow")
"If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time" - R. Kelly
"More Than This" - Roxy Music ("It was fun for awhile/There was no way of knowing/Like a dream in the night/Who can say where we're going...No care in the world/Maybe I'm learning why the sea on the tide has no way of turning")
"Crying" - Roy Orbison
"Only The Lonely" - Roy Orbison
"Adia" - Sarah McLachlan (her best song, probably)
"If It Makes You Happy" - Sheryl Crow
"Nothing Compares 2 U" - Sinead O' Connor (because her version is definitive)
"Ooo Baby Baby" - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (their best ballad)
"Pale Shelter" - Tears For Fears
"Swing Swing" - The All-American Rejects (killer hook)
"I Can't Let Go" - Evie Sands/The Hollies versions
"Don't You Want Me" - Human League (a dark song of obsessive, unreturned love)
"The Great Pretender" - The Platters
"Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" - The Platters (one of the best vocal performances I've ever heard)
"Remember (Walkin' In The Sand)" - The Shangri-Las (theatrical music at its best)
"Yesterday" - The Beatles
"Someday We'll Be Together" - The Supremes
"One More Chance" - Diana Ross
ANYTHING by the Temptations that falls under this category
"Fast Car" - Tracy Chapman
"I Can't Stand The Rain" - Tina Turner

Byron

"Into Temptation", Crowded House

You opened up your door
I couldn’t believe my luck
You in your new blue dress
Taking away my breath
The cradle is soft and warm
Couldn’t do me no harm
You’re showing me how to give

Into temptation
Knowing full well the earth will rebel
Into temptation

In a muddle of nervous words
Could never amount to betrayal
The sentence is all my own
The price is to watch it fail
As I turn to go
You looked at me for half a second
An open invitation for me to go

Into temptation
Knowing full well the earth will rebel
Into temptation
Safe in the wide open arms of hell

We can go sailing in
Climb down
Lose yourself when you linger long
Into temptation
Right where you belong

The guilty get no sleep
In the last slow hours of morning
Experience is cheap
I should’ve listened to the warning
But the cradle is soft and warm

Into temptation
Knowing full well the earth will rebel
Into your wide open arms
No way to break the spell
Don’t tell

Byron

"Do What You Have To Do", Sarah McLachlan

What ravages of spirit
conjured this temptuous rage,
created you a monster,
broken by the rule of love?
And fate has led you through it.
You do what you have to do.
And fate has led you through it.
You do what you have to do.

And I have the sense to recognize
that I don't know how to let you go.

Every moment marked
with apparitions of your soul.
I'm ever swiftly moving,
trying to escape this desire,
the yearning to be near you.
I do what I have to do.
The yearning to be near you.
I do what I have to do.

AND I have the sense to recognize
that I don't know how to let you go.
I don't know how to let you go.

A glowing ember, burning hot,
AND burning slow.
Deep within, I'm shaken by the violence
of existing for only you.

I know I can't be with you.
I do what I have to do.
I know I can't be with you.
I do what I have to do.

And I have THE sense to recognize
But I don't know how to let you go.
I don't know how to let you go.
I don't know how to let you go.

And I don't know what happened to our love
