George Michael - Songs from the last century A True classic for me.. I totally dig how he reworked U2's song, and especially Roxanne, a sting masterpiece..
A Classy piece of work that gets better with age, a nice move for George. Way to go... [This message was edited Sun Jan 4 20:03:19 PST 2004 by Sdldawn]

eh...
this was the one that made me give up on him. at least until he got his ass in gear and actually did something worthwhile. (still waiting for that, but i hear he's got something coming out early this year -- first single "John and Elvis are dead" or something like that). his voice does sound nice on it, but he adds absolutely nothing to any of the tired worn-out standards. the couple of newer songs he did were also a waste of time and not screaming out "i need to be covered in a lite-jazz snoozefest!" you'd think all those years he was battling with Sony and not putting out albums, that he'd have a backlog of more than 1 album's worth of material. and that one's over 7 years old now. Covering the songs was a nice 'cap' to entering the 2000 era, so its very reflective in a sence that he should only do one album like that, and I dont forsee him ever doing anything like that again.. but I love it! very nice

It didn't do anything for me either. But I took it because he's a fucking genius and I knew it'd be another twelve years or something like that before he did another record.
I'm just waiting with 'Patience'...

I wish he would cover Peter Brown's "Do you wanna get funky with me."

It adds nothing to and takes nothing away from his body of work. It's also, frankly, not very good. Still greatly looking forward to George's new album this year. He wasnt trying to make Faith when he did this album, This album deserves credit for what it is. This is the kindof music he sounds good at, well to be honest, any kind but dance music.. He plain out sucks when he tries to techno it out..

This is one of my favorite albums of his, right up there with Listen Without Prejudice. George Michael has a great voice, and it gets even better when you pair him up with well written songs, not some throwaway bouncy dance number.
It was a really classy side of George Michael to offset the scandals in years prior. Good stuff.

His rendition of 1 of my fave songs ever: 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' is sublime

Really? Hmmm... Maybe I'll give it another listen. I remember not liking any of the album when I heard it, and "The First Time..." is one of my all time favs. I was really disappointed in the album. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

So I did listen to the album last night -- as much as I could handle without being BORED out of my mind!!! It wasn't as bad as I remembered, but I almost wish it was really, really horrible, rather than simply uninteresting. George is capable of so much more. http://elmadartista.tumblr.com/ http://twitter.com/madartista

i agree. i couldn't believe how he reworked 'roxanne'. i didn't think it was possible to do jazz it up like that. sting does a jazzy version on 'all this time' dvd. it doesn't compare. way to go G.

It' very mellow, but it's terrific. I love "the first time ever I saw your face". Beautiful. I can't wait for this man to release new music. I love all his solo work.
