Wow you're young! I'm pretty surprised you've heard "The Power" and not "Black Velvet", which was such a huge song and still gets played quite a lot on light rock stations (it's a light rock song that really rocks!). I think it's a really great track and it's played so often that I'm pretty sure Alanah must still make a really good chunk of change off that song.

Is that in both countries? Could be worse? Could be "Woman In Love" by Sterisand. I haven't even heard this song and I don't like Sterisand (but I like her politics...you know what I'm saying!).

UK number one was something by some band called Wizzard - i'm sure another really awful one hit wonder involving two guys and two girls.

PainIsLove said that Mariah's "Someday" was number one and I think that came out in 1990 as well and it wasn't her first single so she might be younger.
