Mary Jane Girls

Remember back in the 80s Rick James pulled a Prince and created a lingerie clad girl group (a la Vanity 6) called the Mary Jane Girls?
They had a bit of a hit, can't remember exactly what it was called "my house" or something? I've been trying to remember how it goes - could someone hum it to me? Please?

The Mary Jane Girls were great. They released two albums, both of which went gold, and they had a handful of hit singles...

"Candy Man" (1983)
"All Night Long" (1983)
"Jealousy" (1983)
"Boys"(1983)
"In My House" (1985)
"Wild And Crazy Love" (1985)
"Girlfriend" (1985)
"Walk Like A Man" (1986)

Rick James has said that it was Prince who stole HIS idea for a sexy girl group.According to Rick,he came up with the idea back in 1979,mentioned it in a few interviews and then saw Prince create Vanity 6 in 1982.In 1986,at the height of their popularity,The Mary Jane Girls were involved in a tug-of-war situation with Motown and Rick.He was planning to leave the label and wanted to take the girls with him to a new label.Motown objected.Meanwhile,a third Mary Jane Girls album was recorded during this time---produced by James,it was tentatively titled 'Conversation'---but it remains in the Motown vaults.Motown really wanted the girls to stay with the label, promising to get Jam and Lewis (who were red-hot at the time) to produce their next album.

These days,The Mary Jane Girls still tour.In fact,I'll be seeing them on February 6.But the last time I saw them live (in 2002),only one original member, lead singer JoJo,was in the group.

I just saw a bit of that "Candy Man" video yesterday, with one of the singers I think, running a red licorice rope over her lips.

Repulsive!

"In My House" is a classic, one of Rick Jame's best productions. It boasts a ferocious groove, sexy lyrics and a great chorus. The video was also fantastic.

"So when you need some love and tenderness
and it's me baby that you miss
here's the key to unlock the door
to my house,to my house"
