Joss Stone

If U havent heard of her, Id like to draw your attention to 16 old Brit, Joss Stone. She has a great, soulful voice for someone so young as can be heard on her debut album The Soul Sessions. Although all the songs on the album are covers, the choices are interesting including a funky take on The White Stripes, 'Fell in love with a girl' except in this case 'boy'. The album is co-produced by The Roots' ?uestlove and Stone has won the admiration of contemporaries including Angie Stone. I like her, hope you do too.

She's OK, but I have NO idea why they keep touting her as the next Aretha. Aretha Franklin she ain't, that's for sure. Not even close to that league of singer.

Who is touting her as the next Aretha(as if there could ever be another)? I have never heard of that..that's foolish. I dont think they are that dumb (the public relatio,ns a&r folks) to do something like that.

The press (and some of the more artsy critics)...at least in Canada. I thought it was foolish too.

and when they finally played a song i though, "well...she is okay in an American Idol kinda way..."

let the girl experience some of the emotions she is blandly singing 'bout right now...then lets see what she sounds like...

It's a solid album, she's got a good voice. Just accept it on its own merits.

When DO you experience those kinds of emotions, if NOT at 17? That's your first crush, first time, first breakup...

When Celine Dionne sings about the first time, I'm wondering, "for what? Collagen Lip Injections? Meat?" When Patti Labelle sings about her heartbreak, I'm wondering, "over what, poor stock performance?"

That doesn't change the fact that Ms. Stone is merely average.

when you can hear those emotions conveyed within the vocal execution...

interesting you point out Celine..that girl can be singing about a thousand deaths and still not convey a single emotion in her voice...its all screech...

and patti, live, overkills it..but i cant help but cry when i hear her give a subtle vocal perfomance (on my own seriously gets me choked up everytime)...

when I heard stone I heard a girl singing well written songs...it didnt annoy me..but it didnt grab me either...

She's only 16. Give that voice sometime to blossom. She sounds decent to me right now.

There aint a damn thing wrong with her voice..in fact it s very mature sounding for her age and she does sound as if she has already had some life experience the way she sings some of the songs especially Chokin Kind...Joss gets an A regardless .
