New Order! I've never owned a New Order cd. My boyfriend's friend had to move away and he gave us a box full of cds and there were 3 New Order cds in there. Today I had my first listen of Power, Corruption and Lies on the way to work. Wow! Not what I was expecting at all. I chose to listen to this one first because I recognized Blue Monday. I haven't heard the whole cd yet, but I was struck by their sound. To my ears, first impression, they sound like a combination of The Cure (guitar and baselines), U2 (vocals and arrangements, some rhythms) and The Police (vocal tone and delivery). I've listened to the Police a lot, but U2 and Cure only a little bit, so my perception might be skewed.
So who digs them and why? What are your favorite New Order cds/songs? [This message was edited Wed Dec 31 9:42:03 PST 2003 by VinaBlue]

I'm sadly only a "hit-fan"...I've only ever owned their greatest hits...it's a shame cause they are fabulous judging by those songs...True Faith, Bizarre Love Triangle and Blue Monday are classics

Take one step back and listen to a little Joy Division. All the gals say hoe if your man's giving up the gold. All the fellas say ruff if you're only giving up the bone.

They are definitely one of my favorite bands.
You're somewhat accurate in your assessment of their sound. Except the groundwork for their style was laid by Joy Division, their parent band. The high, melodic bass, the mechanical drumming, the angular, blocky guitar sound. The Cure and U2 are wonderful bands as well, but they totally ripped off Joy Division for their early sound. As far as I can tell, Joy Division were the first band to sound like that. New Order just expanded on that and incorporated a lot of dance styles into their later work. Power, Corruption and Lies was a great first choice and still possibly their best album. Which other ones did you get. I'm really digging their box set Retro. It's not perfect by any means, but it has a lot of their best stuff. And the sound quality, packaging and song selection are killer. I'd have to say my favorite songs of theirs are: Ceremony (a leftover of Joy Division's) Dreams Never End Procession Temptation Cries and Whispers Everything's Gone Green Age Of Consent Your Silent Face Leave Me Alone Thieves Like Us Lonesome Tonight All Day Long Every Little Counts Bizarre Love Triangle True Faith Touched By The Hand Of God Paradise Fine Time Vanishing Point Run World Regret Slow Jam Here To Stay Damn, now I need to listen to them!

The picture looks a lot different small. She's got a naked man's back in your avatar. Doesn't look the same at all in the larger one.

Naked man's back? Hmmm, you know what? Maybe it got a little distorted in the process. I'll try again. . [This message was edited Wed Dec 31 14:06:58 PST 2003 by VinaBlue]

Naked man's back? Hmmm, you know what? Maybe it got a little distorted in the process. I'll try again. It probably looks different to you cuz you know the picture so well. But can't you see it, just a little. It looks like a naked dude about to turn around or something.

It looks like a naked dude about to turn around or something. Yeah, kinda. I guess it's the way I cropped it. But I also think it kinda got wider too, to fit in the avatar space. Not sure. Naked guys are cool though.

Naked guys are cool though. Sorry for turning this into a thread about nakedness. I officially revert this thread back to the topic at hand. What does everyone think about their last album, Get Ready? I think as an album, it might be their best yet. It's just solid and rocking all the way through.

Cool! Yeah, I knew about Joy Division. I knew they were first. I was just giving my impression of what New Order sounded like from my reference points. I thought maybe they all came from the same time or something. Now I get it! Thanks! Power, Corruption and Lies was a great first choice and still possibly their best album. Technique and Republic. I'm excited to listen to these all! I recognize the singles. They used to play New Order all the time on the alternative radio station here. I remember when Fine Time came out and the DJ said it was a new style of music called Acid House, because people were doing acid while listening to the music. I'll pay attention to your list and listen for your favorite tracks on these cds.

Love Less
I remember this song. It just breaks my heart. I have a tape somewhere that is full of New Order songs that I recorded off the radio. Gotta find it.
