R&B lovers, If you had to pick just one....

If could only keep one album from each of the artists listed below, what would it be:

Prince:

Earth, Wind & Fire:

Stevie Wonder:

Sade:

Rick James:

George Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic:

Cameo:

{Mine}

Prince: 1999 > Still the definative Prince album. This is where Prince became Prince.

EWF: All n All > With so man great EWF albums this was a tough choice. "I AM" would be a close second.

Stevie: Songs in the Key of Life > When I think Stevie it's this album.

Sade: Stronger Than Pride > I would pick this on the strength of "Keep Looking" alone.

Rick James: Throw Down > 69 Times, Hard to get, Dance Wit Me, this is Rick at his very best.

George Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic: Computer Games > Most people would take an earlier Parliament/Funkadelic album but a lot of those older albums had 2-3 jams with the rest being filler. Computer Games was George's best work from start to finish.

Cameo: Alligator Woman > Really depends on which Cameo you want but Alligator Woman does a great job bridging the old funk style Cameo had with the "Word Up" style shit that they would be famous for years later. Is there a funkier jam ever than Flirt?

my choices are probably "rather obvious", but they're mine anyway:

Prince - DIRTY MIND; the album where I think "Prince really became Prince" & wouldn't go on to be just another "typical R&B great"

Earth Wind & Fire - THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD; the perfect, quintessential EW&F album. after this 1 they still made very good music, but it was more & more "pop oriented"

Stevie Wonder - difficult choice; I'm going to "cheat" here & say ORIGINAL MUSIQUARIUM, even though technically this is a "greatest hits" package. if I "had to" choose 1 non-greatest hits realease, I'd probably choose FULFILLINGNESS FIRST FINALE just because of the song
Smile

Sade - PROMISE; the "jazziest", most seductive album from a solid catalogue, which contains the TIMELESS & BRILLIANT Is It A Crime, Never As Good As The First Time.. not really a "weak" song on this album

Rick James - I am going to cheat here & say ANTHOLOGY because while I do believe that Rick is indeed 1 of the greatest funk acts of all time, from what I've heard off of each of his albums, there's not enough on any of them to make me buy any of those albums.. though I might 1 day get STREET SONGS, as many believe this is his best album..

P-Funk - again, a tough call. I think the "P-Funk sound" continually & markedly "evolved" from about '74 through '78, & it peaked with FUNKENTELECHY VS THE PLACEBO SYNDROME, which is probably why I'd choose that album. the VOCAL MASTERY of Glenn Goins on Bop Gun, the hard-driving yet mellow Funkentelechy ("rump to rump, we shall get down!") & the CLASSIC P-Funk anthem that featured the synthesizer wizardry of Bernie Worrell & the too nasty rhythm guitar licks of Phelps "Catfish" Collins. for me a CLOSE 2nd would be the P-FUNK LIVE EARTH TOUR album from '77, which gives an idea of how good a P-Funk show was back then

Cameo - yet again, I'd be inclined to choose their ANTHOLOGY album, but I do own CAMEOSIS, so I'd probably choose that 1

If you notcie i said "If YOU had to choose" I didn't ask which album from each is the best or which one MOST people would like, only which album YOU would keep since it gives YOU the most joy.

"Throw Down" is not groundbreaking by any means. Street Songs would most likely fit that bill but let's look at the strongest cuts from that album. "Give It To Me", "SuperFreak" and "Fire and Desire" are all songs that might be great but I couldn't stand to listen to again at this point. They have been over-played to the point of being unlistenable. Do you really roll around bumpin Super Freak still? The only song I can still listen to from that album is "Ghetto Life".

Throw Down is Rick's best party album IMO. It's Rick after making it to Super Star status. You can tell he's having fun just making this album. Brining in the Temps, Roy Ayres and other cats he just feels like jammin with. Hard To Get, Standing on the Top, Dance Wit Me, and 69 Times are straight classic jams. Even lesser known cuts like Throw Down and Money Talks are jammin. It's just a fun record all around.

The reason I picked the groups above, is because none have that ONE album everyone would agree on. It's interesting to see what each person enjoys most when talking about the same artist. So before you get all bent out of shape because I picked an album you don't happen to enjoy as much as I do, just remember who's opinion it is I'm giving. Mine. And I think I'm the most qualified to give my own opinion.

Prince: I'm tempted to say a compilation (no, NOT "The Hits") but 1999 at the moment.

Earth, Wind & Fire: That's The Way Of The World, but I sure would miss "I'll Write A Song For You."

Stevie Wonder: Innervisions

Sade: a compilation.

Rick James: a compilation.

George Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic: a compilation

Cameo: Alligator Woman, although there are a couple of clunkers on there, the strongest material is VERY strong. And the drums on this album are better than on any of their other albums.

Interesting analysis.I think 'Throwin Down' is a very underrated album. There are some solid jams there. It's probably the last truly brilliant Rick James album (although 'Cold Blooded' has some fierce jams as well).

Prince: The Gold Experience
Earth Wind and Fire: I Am
Stevie Wonder: Songs in the Key of Life (although it's nice to see people picking Fullfillingness' on here!)
Cameo: Single Life
Rick James: Street Songs
Sade: Lover's Rock
George Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic: I'd probably have to make my own compilation, but if I had to pick a single studio album, it'd be between Mothership Connection and Funkentelechy, though I'd give the edge to Mothership Connection, probably ?!

Hey Youngca,I just noticed that you are in Chicago.I'll be coming out that way in 2004,we gotta hook up and hang out.

Best cuts on Rick's 'Street Songs' album...

***"Give It To Me Baby"---punk funk at it's best. You gotta love that bassline. You could play this jam at a party today and I guarantee you, folks will get up and start dancing.
***"Mr.Policeman"---Rick did a song about police brutality long before the rappers came along. This is a wonderful Bob Marley-inspired track, with Teena Marie and Stevie Wonder joining in.
***"Call Me Up"---delightful funk groove
***"Below The Funk (Pass The J)"---Oh man, this is the JAM!! Rick ends the album with a powerful funk jam.

Best cuts on Stevie's 'SITKOL' album...

***"Summer Soft"---my favorite track from this masterpiece
***"Another Star"---this is a fiery Latin-flavored workout that just takes you higher and higher and higher.Hear this song and you'll be humming it all day long.
***"Pastime Paradise"---Lawd,what an amazing track.Damn!!
***"All Day Sucker"---probably the funkiest Stevie Wonder jam EVER.
