Miles Davis; The Jack Johnson Sessions

Just picked this 5 disc set up for a gift for myself and I'm just blown away. Although I've not heard the original album, I now don't want to.

Some of it is a little repeatitive but Herbie, Chick Corea and Miles fuckin Davis are just from another planet and I've got to get there.

Sly and the family Stone riffs are also another highlight.

Anyone else heard this?

You'll find the original album on Disc 5.

I've got all the Miles Box-Sets except this one for two reasons. 1) I'm now on a working holiday so I can't really afford it, and 2) I don't really think I could take 5 different version of "Willie Nelson"! I think that Sony/Columbia have nothing really "new" to add to the Miles legacy. As others have mentioned before, there's a reason this stuff wasn't released back in the 70s because it was sub-par (although I havn't heard it yet so I can't really comment). Oh, and I think the original Jack Johnson album is one of his best, definately underated by most casual listeners!

It seems like anytime Miles moved in a studio, they recorded it for a box set. I agree with the Willie Nelson comment but as far as sub-par I don't feel like it. It was a time and place type thing and I can't tell you how many rehearsel and sound check "imports" I have by Prince. I just like hearing how songs develop.

Co-sign,Slave.

I dont have this set yet,but Ive enjoyed the other ones.Sometimes alternate takes are better, and many times these sets contain trax not available anywhere else. The original unchopped "In a Silent Way" is a good example.

It's a great companion piece to The Complete Bitches Bew Sessions and the In A Silent Way Sessions. I wonder what they're going to release next by way of box set Miles?

Miles set so many standards it's hard for me to pick out one as his ultimate. But in terms of his acoustic albums, Kind of Blue is the one for me.

Next up is the 10CD Live @ the Cellar Door Box. Yum.

Jack Johnson is my favorite Sony Box set so far (and I'm more of a bop-Miles fan than an electric Miles. 4 1/2 hours of unreleased Miles. yes Willie Nelson gets repetitive after the fourth version, but there's 4 other discs to work with (not discounting Willie, coz the 1st 3 versions are excellent, and fit more as one piece than "damn here's another one"). I've been stuck on disc 4 for a few months now (I've had it since April...).

Worth every penny... Love it.

BoraBora

I think Miles' "Jack Johnson Complete Session" is really strong.
I love the original album and listening to 5-disc full of similar material it's absolutely great for me (even tought I would have preferred to have different takes of the same song shuffled over the 5-disc and not in sequence, but that's all...).
Now what I really hope to see in the future is a "On The Corner Complete Session"...

Glad someone else is feeling me on this.

It really is a must for the Funk or Miles fan.

Live at the Filmore was recorded around the same time as JJS was recorded, I've re-discovered it. A little out there at points and a little Jack Johnson at other points.
