Copy Controlled CDs

Is anyone else as peeved about this latest trend as I am? I listen to the majority of my music via my mp3 collection, so when I buy a disc, I rip it to my hard drive, and then transfer it to an mp3 player. I'm tired of constantly changing discs.

Not possible with these, so I don't buy them. I understand the labels' predicament, but they've also lost about $50 in revenue from me -- and I know many are also boycotting these 'locked' discs, some of which have refused to play even on conventional CD players.

The Beatles - Let It Be (Naked) and the import version of The Pet Shop Boys double disc hits set won't be in my collection sad

Personally, I have not experienced any problems ripping Copy Controlled CDs to my MP3 player.

I use Nero to rip them and they all playback fine. What are you guys using?

thanks for the tip.

yep, I bought Let it Be Naked, but for the most part I don't buy newly released Cds, so it's not a problem for me.

Thanks for the tip. I might buy one and see how it goes. I'd avoided buying them because I'd heard various horror stories about the technology (ie. can't play it on select CD players)

I just didn't want to waste my money, since in Canada you can't return a CD due to copyright laws.

I don't the American ones are copy controlled either.I burned it for my friend. And the cd's usually have a sticker or something on it telling you it's copy controlled.

Well, it took a while, but I was finally able to copy the Pet Shop Boys PopArt collection to mp3s. Had to try out a few diff. programs and use an 85 cent felt tip pen to black out the "copy control technology" portion of the disc (the outer rim), thereby defeating their $85 million technology.

The Pet Shop Boys one was...I think it just depends on what program you're using to rip.

I was able to rip the new outkast no problem but could not rip Anthony Hamelton's CD using Music Match. I don't think it's the software as much as it is the disk. It seems some of the outkast disks are burn protected and some are not.

No universal laws for labelling copy controlled (corrupted) discs mean that you can never tell one way or another sad And they wonder why CD sales are plumetting?

Additionally, many copy controlled discs do not conform to the audio fidelity standards (Red Book Standards) developed by Phillips in 1978. So in effect you're not buying an audio CD, you're buying an inferior product.

Exactly - these are NOT really Compact Discs, they are lumps of crappy plastic.

You should be able to get your money back if they sold it as a CD and it isn't (eg you can't play it in your car, on your computer etc.), at least in the UK.

If it doesn't play on a Compact Disc compatible device, it isn't a Compact Disc. Simple as that.

ONLY EVER BUY CDs THAT CARRY THE COMPACT DISC LOGO!
