Chrissy Hynde (she doesn't have to scream or yell for power)

Johnette Napalotano(Concrete Blonde)-her voice is as cool/smokey as any past great

Nancy Wilson (Heart)-a female Robert Plant

Stevie Nicks..she gets dogged for her froggy style but Dreams shows she can and does have a great voice amongst rock...as well as her taint in harmonys with Lindsay on several songs

Ian Astbury ( The Cult). He has a very very powerful voice that is so underrated or unrecognized. Sure he has a lot of vibrato,--he's like an opera singer but still.

Another underrated singer is Chrissy Hynde from the Pretenders, and also Eddie Vedder. He has a beautiful voice.

Glad I saw this...

watched Culture Club DVD live @ the Royal Hall.

Boy George IMO has an amazing voice.

Musically they are always overshadowed by his flamboyancy, but these guys groove.

Not too mention the woman who sings back on just blows the roof off.

check it out

Their backup woman is Helen Terry and she, too, is amazing.

I love Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder is the incomparable rugged, emotive male voice. Every thing he sings you feel. Plus he has a trillion times the credibility of Cobain.

2 names that immediately come to mind are Steve Perry of Journey who has an absolutely amazing voice and Roland Orzabal of Tears For Fears.

Guess I'll have to add Teddy Pendergrass to this list...he's largely forgotten, and I don't know why.

You think so? I don't know too many people who have 'forgotten' Teddy. Teddy is still one of the most revered soul singers ever. He's 'forgotten' in the same way that Teena's forgotten.

For me, THE most underrated vocalists are:

Shanice- This girl has been in the business for a while but never got the props she deserved. Her voice is incredible and is one of the rare artists in the business that can actually clearly hit the high note in Minnie Riperton's, "Loving You".

Howard Hewett- Although he has had some success with both Shalamar and solo projects, I always thought his voice never really got him enough appreciation.

Glenn Jones- Talk about soul...this brother has it and can sang his butt off. Never got the appreciation he deserves.

Jonathan Butler- I never understood how so many people could sleep on this man's vocals. I just can't put into words how I feel about this man's voice.

Martha Wash- I've always loved this womans voice. Such Power and smoothness. Many associate her career with C&C Music Factory but The Weather Girls and Two Tons of Fun is the time I fell in love with her voice.

Just to add some definite honorable mentions:

Cyndi Lauper
Boy George
Pink
Stokely from Mint Condition (underrated band)
Dorinda Clark (Clark Sisters)

Donna Summer- voice very underrated and is STILL clear and beautiful today. One of the few "old school" voices that has held up and stood the test of time.

Faith Evans- Mary J. Blige got the props I think Faith deserved

Rahsaan Patterson- I added him to this list because his two albums were so great and overlooked, I couldn't keep him off of a list about anything underrated.
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.
