>neither is singing. i'm glad things have shifted back a bit, so there aren't so many good singers writing crap songs and good songwriters torturing us with their crap voices.<

You've got a point. That's why we're on a Prince site after all, we value the whole package.

If you look at the greatest artists in music, most likely you won't also find a great singer, and vice versa.

*** I DONT BLAME HER!!!

American Idol is for LAZY People! If you had any balls you would go to LA, Nashville or NYC and work your ass off to be heard!

Standing in line to be heard by those 3 MORONS is not being in the music business!!

YOU need to struggle.. you need to understand each level of success!

NOT.. just standing in line and being on some stupid TV Show!! THEN because your on this show and Mid-America NO life having White-Trash watches it every week because they have nothing going..so it gets ratings.. YOU then get to do some stupid "American Idol Tour"..

and of course after you sign your life away on the dotted line.. they put you on their magazines & MTV (it is one big monopoly) we all know that .. dont we by now?

** But no talent acts like these... that are made up by the Record Labels ( all place together) to sell MERCH should NEVER complain about getting screwed out of money!!

Because they are NO real acts!! They never struggled!

WHO would ever think that:

Sea World
Mickey Mouse Club
and.. Standing in line for a Reality Show

WOULD make you a number 1 star in MUSIC???

wow has music dropped to the level of PORNO!

I agree with Alicia Keys.Madonna expressed a similiar viewpoint earlier this year.Shows like 'American Idol' create fake, manufactured "stars" overnight and sadly, the public buys into this nonsense.Clay Aiken and his music is pure crap but because of this TV show, his album reaches Number One.

What's wrong with being able sing? It seems to me there are two many pop stars these days who can't sing but are famous only because they have "the look".

Some of the most successful stars in history could "only sing". Elvis hardly ever wrote a song. Played a little guitar, but not often. Did Frank Sinatra write his own songs? How about Bing Crosby? Barbara Streisand? Celien Dion?

Clay Aiken can flat out sing. There is no way Clay Aiken gets a chance without American Idol. He doesn't have "the look." Yet he put out an album with some great songs and some great singing. For instance, Touch is the best new song I've heard in a long time.

to add to what I just said - I also prefer the whole package. That's why I'm such a fan of both Prince and the Bee Gees. Yet I can appreciate what Celein Dion brings on Immortality, or Barbara Streisand brings on Guilty.

It seems Prince has been guilty of the same thing the industry is guilty of too. Pushing no talent people on us as singers simply because of their looks. People like Vanity, Carmen Electra, Mayte, etc. Fortunately sometimes he goes the other direction, and collaborates with people simply because of their amazing voices. Mavis Staples, Rosie Gains, etc.

I was asking - the ones I cited certainly aren't known as singer/songwriters, and certainly aren't known as musicians, but rather as vocalists.

Personally, I think Alicia makes a good point, in a very ineloquent way. American Idol is just a friggin' game show, with judges who know crap all about music. Paula Abdul could definitely judge a choreography contest, but she's no musician. Simon, oh please! So he is really good with insults, that makes him a good judge? If that's the case, we need Triumph The Insult Dog as a judge (he's funnier, anyway)!

Why not get real musicians to judge real musicians? Why not have people who are not just vocalists, but actual singer-songwriters? I think Alicia makes a good point that this is just cementing the whole concept of the pop product, instead of encouraging real artistry in music.

American Idol is possibly the worst show ever on television. Music should be about art, not just getting a record put out. Prince would agree.

For once, I agree with you.

>It really doesn't matter if someone writes their own songs or not. It doesn't prove more or less talent<

Get real. Songwriting is not something just anyone can do.

riiight. Taking a sample and looping it over and over again and creating a simple melody over is not something just anyone can do. I'll remember that

I could care less about the behind the scenes stuff. I care more about the finished product, which needs a good singer. Is it a plus if the singer wrote their own songs? Yes, but is it neccessary? No. So, anyone who doesn't write their own music is a piece of shit? Where did that come from? You must not like any artists from the 50's, 60's, and 70's then
