Rick Astley / Blue Eyed Soul

Would he qualify for a "blue eyed soulster" or is he just 80s disposable pop?

What are all the Blue Eyed Soul acts?
Teena Marie
Lisa Stansfield (does she qualify?)
Simply Red
Jon B

name more...

The Righteous Brothers and Hall & Oates! They're the very definition of blue-eyed soul. Daryl Hall especially has an incredible voice.

Even though H&O absolutely HATE the term "blue-eyed soul" (they consider it racist, and I can see their point).

My other favs would be Lisa Stansfield and Teena Marie. Rick Astley has a tremendous voice that is (in my opinion) good enough to surmount his sometimes repetitive material.

Even though All-4-One had one black and one latino member. I still consider them BES.

Color Me Badd comes to mind as well (even though they had one black member).

Robyn?

Jamiroquai? (That "Space Cowboy" single used to get a lot of play on BET)

Nu Shooz (Blue Eyed Electro R&B?) hehe

Lol, so true. I'm sooo tired of Britney right now. She just needs to go away. Robyn had two top ten hits (Show Me Love and Do You Know (What It Takes) both made #7), and the followup album was released only in Europe for some arbitrary reason. She could sing. I think it's a conspiracy to get rid of the people who can sing and replace them with brainless bimbos like Spears who can't - but will consent to implants and an orange tan.

The Average White Band (who were anything but average).

George Michael has a lot of what's considered "blue eyed soul" material, as does Van Morrison.

Eva Cassidy.

Dusty Springfield.

Steve Winwood.

Rare Earth.

Soul Survivors (remember "Expressway To Your Heart"? - one of Gamble & Huff's earliest productions).

Remember "Gimme Some Lovin"?, Steve Winwood's hit with The Spencer Davis Group? That's a great Motown-ish track.

Oh mu God! My best friend and I bought Rick Astley's Greatest Hits, and we blast it when we're driving around, lol.
'Cause your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance... well, they're no friends of mine.

I had to buy it as an import release, but it was definitely worth it. His latest was 2001's "Keep It Turned On", which is now out of print after a Europe-only release. Good album, though. His voice has aged nicely.

Don't forget Bobby Caldwell "What you won't do for love"

Most might not agree, but I would include Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and now Audioslave. He has that rock/soul/bluesy twinge about his voice.

The Bee Gees
Steve Perry (Journey)
Tom Jones
Remy Shand
"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!
"It's just my imagination, once again running away with me."

"Never Gonna Give You Up" was a great song, and Rick had one mighty voice ... Can't remember anything he did after that, and wouldn't want to either.

Actually, Bowie even performed "Fame" on Soul Train.

And James Brown lifted Carlos Alomar's guitar riff for his song "Hot (I Need To Be Loved, Loved, Loved)"

Yeah yeah yeah!! I've always thought Chris Cornell was almost like a soul singer in a heavy rock band! I like Remy a lot 2. He's more old school than guys like D'Angelo (but I like him too!)
