I'll survive.

He went to the well way too much for the vocoder, for my tastes.

Quite obviously because I felt like it. You don't want contrary opinions don't start a thread.

Vocoder, Talkbox, I couldn't care less. Ain't much difference. Perhaps you should start your own site if you want to put the kobosh on responses you don't like.

I like this song a lot. But it's somewhat of a guilty pleasure, imho. It's a tad cheesy, but in a good way. It's a fun song.

When they did this song live, Roger used to do something Prince NEVER did - he would pull a "big gurl" on stage and sing to her and pretend to go down on her. It showed a much less superficial side to him. Nothing makes an audience identify with a performer more than when he/she comes down of his/her high horse. Prince could have used a lesson or two on this back in the day. Plus, as I've said on other threads, I've seen Roger play more instruments onstage (well, I might add) than I have Prince. He was musically just as if not more talented. He just chose to do R&B, Funk and jazz rather thn venture out into rock and...tehno barf

r.Supernova because Roger did not perform rock does not mean he wasn't talented. I saw Roger and Zapp a few times back in the day .They Rocked!!. Roger was just as talented as Prince and I think I can speak for a lot of funk fans on Prince org members when I say that the constant put down of other black artist on this site is out of fucking control.

I agree. I know Prince is very, very talented, but I do honestly believe Roger Troutman was equally or even more talented than Prince. Listen 2 songs like 'Maxx Axe' from 'Many Facets of Roger' and u will see how great Roger's music is. Roger also wrote the awesome ballad 'As We Lay' for Shirley Murdoch.

Roger Troutman was and still is a great musician and its awesome 2 see others who appreciate his music also.

I only listen 2 R&B/Soul/Funk and rap music and have all my life. I really dislike criticism of this music, I understand that every1 has their own views.

I welcome all opinons on this thread & u can say what u want as every1 is entitled 2 his/her opinion. However it doesn't mean that I have 2 agree wink.

There were so many stupid assumptions in her post, I could pick it apart if I really wanted to. Her knee jerk reaction is that someone who doesn't like the song automatically dislikes it because it's not rock. Not only is that idiotic, but she knows nothing about me to even base that assumption on.

Because there ARE many people on this site who have a tendency to criticize Black dominated styles of music, all of a sudden she so BADLY misconstrues my comments about not liking the song as to equate them as a "put down of black artists". That's some idiocy right there. I could understand that criticism if she had something logical to go on. But that's paranoia.

Let me start by saying that I'm as "black" as Roger and Prince. lol Having said that I Wanna Be Your Man is okay but not even close to one of Roger's best songs. It isn't funky like his best cuts and is kind of boring. Like somebody else said there's way too much vocoder on the song.

Now as for the comparative talents of Prince and Roger I guess that's up to opinion. I never saw Zapp live so I can speak of Roger's musicianship, stage presence, or dancing. However, I can say that Prince's range of abilities is much greater. His songs are more layered and in some cases melodic. There's a depth to Prince's music that Zapp's lacked. The voice is an often overlooked instrument and Prince uses his with the best of them-- vocoders pale in comparison. Thus, to compare Roger to Prince outside of a funk context is ridiculous. If the argument was who's funkier than you'd have a case, but a more talented musician? Wake up. lol

I love the talkbox/vocoder on that song. For me, that's pretty much all I can think of with that song but it makes it classic.
