I was wondering who is the most sampled singer/band. I would say it must b James Brown but George Clinton and Roger & Zapp must b included 2 as lots of rappers have sampled Zapp's 'More Bounce 2 The Ounce'

Most-sampled producers would have to be Jam & Lewis both providing the samples (Cherelle's "Saturday Love" becomes Jennifer Lopez's "Loving You") and sampling themselves (even within the same year, when they turned Alexander O'Neal's "Fake" into Janet Jackson's "Nasty").

I can't tell you how many times I've heard The Emotions' "Best Of My Love" sampled, though.

Nile Rodgers seems to be sampled a lot. Not only his Chic ("Good Times" work but also his producded stuff (Diana Ross' "I'm Coming Out"). I'm sure there are more incidents than this.

I'd say sting/Police.

Here's some of my favorite breakbeats:

Skull Snaps "It's a New Day"
Finess mentioned Honey Drippers' "Impeach The President" and James Brown's "Funky Drummer" already. These drums are up there with most sampled and distinctly sounding drums. First used on Stezo "It's My Turn" and discovered by Stezo's cousin Dooley-O in the mid/late 80s.


Dexter Wansel "Theme From The Planets"
Sounds dope played at 45. Great b-boy jam begins with oft-sampled drums.


ESG "UFO"
Sounds dope played at 33. Alot of rap songs in the late 80s used the siren on the beginning! (Thanks Marley Marl)


Lyn Collins "Think (About It)"
There's like 3 similar drum breaks. Song is probably most recognizable as Rob Base's "It Takes Two".


James Brown "Funky President"
Famous intro for the drums, guitar and even vocals ("nnaasteh. HEY!"). Think Eric B & Rakim's "Eric B Is President".


Kool & The Gang "N.T."
Drums are used alot; Q-Tip's "Breathe And Stop" is a pretty recent usage.


Sly & Family Stone "Sing A Simple Song"
I love these drums.. used more than you might realize! Digital Underground's "Humpty Dance" has a pretty dirty open loop of it.


Mohawks "The Champ"
This organ melody is burned into the brains of all hiphoppers. Think Maestro Fresh-Wes' "Let Your Backbone Slide" or the chopped version in KRS-One's "Step Into A World". I think Onyx was resinging it on "Slam"?


Zapp "More Bounce To The Ounce"
Sampled to death, and usually looped with no changes from the original on alot of west coast records especially. Every rapper's house must have had a copy of this song. I like EPMD's "You Gots To Chill".


Banbara "Shack Up"
Great rhythm track all around. Drum break starts with the blow of a whistle.


Five Stairsteps "Don't Change Your Love"
This is a must for alot of early 90s songs. Starts with a killer bar of drums that have been used A LOT!!! See: drums on Naughty By Nature's "Hip Hop Hooray".


Soul Searchers "Ashley's Roachclip"
This funky instrumental's music has been used but you will probably be most familiar with the drum break. I think the first big usage of this break was Eric B & Rakim's song "Paid In Full". And probably people sampled off the Rakim beat, but nevertheless I guarantee you have heard these drums before. So good that Milli Vanilli had to sample it twice! (Their hits "Baby Don't Forget My Number" and "Girl You Know It's True")


The Headhunters "God Made Me Funky"
There's like a minute of drums before anything gets started on this song hehe. Grandmaster Flash juggles this beat in his kitchen in a scene from a classic hip-hop movie.. 1983's Wild Style.


Detroit Emeralds "You're Gettin' A Little Too Smart"
And if you read my entire post, you're gettin' a little too smart about hip-hop's most plundered breaks. You probably know these drums from Raekwon's "Incarcerated Scarfaces".

I'm a big, big fan of the late great Roger Troutman and Zapp and this song is 1 of my fave songs. Ice Cube and Snoop are amongst the westcoast rappers who have sampled it!.

That's "Sunrise" from their Home album. They took the EXACT backing track from H&O's "I Can't Go For That" (along with some of the chorus lyrics) and added in their own lyrics. They also lifted the main vocal hook from Ace's classic "How Long". It's a Frankenstein, song, really. Composed of other parts from classic songs. I hate it because of that. Zip originality.

OK Seriously, my post was like a crash course in "most sampled songs" for anyone that is curious. You can probably find these songs online. Would make a nice 14-track mix.

James Brown. I would bet my life on it. His beats have been sped up, slowed down, sampled and looped in songs from the Hip-Hop, Rock, House, & Drum & Bass arenas (to name a few). Now that's just his beats.. shall I go on to his voice.

Yeah the single most sampled artist is James Brown. Everyone of his damn songs and associated artists' songs has been plundered.
