Here's a selection from my CD collection. WHat's shit and what isn't then?

Cypress Hill + Funkdoobiest
Lenny Kravitz
James Brown
Jimi Hendrix
Cameo
Ice cube
De la soul
2Pac
Snoop Doggy Dogg
NWA
George Clinton (P + F etc)
Jimmy Cliff
George Benson
Commodores
Stevie Wonder
Luniz
Wu-tang Clan
Jungle Brother
Marvin Gaye
Louis Armstrong
Sophie Ellis Bextor + Girl Aloud

Music snobs would decry your inclusion of Sophie Ellis Bextor and Girls Aloud as "treason!", but they've both made really fun pop records, and what's so bad about that, really? They're harmless, and some of it is really relaxing and enjoyable. But "fun" is antipathy to a true snob wink

I just have to say that I am truely sorry to all ORGers for being such a music snob. When I see people singing the praises of Britney Spears and Madonna, I just lose control and go off! I'm just trying to help.

It's not the snobbery I have a problem with. I have what I consider very high musical standards, that some people would find snobbish. But that isn't the issue. It's your insistence on trolling threads with "so and so sucks" time after time. And if you had valid reasoning to back it up, it might be forgivable. But you rarely explain why you think your taste is superior and why certain artists are beneath your standards. Instead, you just make blanket statements ripping on other orgers and the music they love.

I'm sick of the celebrity rumour mill and the pop nonsense myself but this thread turned me on to some history.

You wanna know about Jazz history?? You'll have to be a bit more specific please. Narrow your inquiry to Big Band\Swing, Bop, Cool, Free Jazz, Fusion, Hard Bop, Latin Jazz, New Orleans, or Soul Jazz

Yes. But that was a rare case. You usually just pop in and say "OutKast sucks ass" or some such.

What's the point anyway?

I admire artist who take music in a new direction. Outkast for instance is redundant hip hop drivel (Big Boi) or a funk\soul copy-cat (dre3000) They aren't doing anything new. They are about as fresh as 50 cent.

Whats to know? Whether two words rhyme or not? What makes a killer break beat? Rap is stale, it has barely evolved since it's birth. Tricky is probably the freshest rapish artist today.

Tricky is one of my favorites, but not exactly rap.

There's actually a lot of skill involved in rapping if it's good. Try it sometime. It's not as easy as it seems.

No, I actually can't stand Outkast, especially Big Boi. Rapping is quite difficult I know. IMO The greats of the genre are Tribe, Dig Planets, Biggie, 2Pac, Wu-Tang, Cube, De La, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Don't care for todays stars such as Jay-Z 50Cent, Eminem, Outkast, etc. I will predict Outkast's break-up right here, right now. Its coming.

Ya know what, I kinda like Missy. Not for her music though. More for what she represents. Not the hottest female out there, but still made it to the top of a man's industry. I like her vid with all the kids dancin' She ain't anywhere near the top of the heap though.

Well, she's never pretended to be anything she's not, including a skilled rapper. I think her strenths are that she's multi-talented and seems to have an endless imagination.

Prince has an endless imagination. If Missy lasts 10 years, I'll be surprised. Her stylists and video producers are on top of it for sure.

So he can rhyme 'misery' with 'penitentiary' in every song. Big deal.

um, cuz yeah, that's a hard prediction. let's see...they released a double cd set with each member having his own disc, thus seeing how people like them solo while still having the safety of 'outkast'. they may not break up alltogether but they are definitely getting started on some solo careers.

this has no bearing on the genius of their current work.

I think I know what you're trying to say.

He wouldn't have half the stature he does today if he hadn't died. And that's why he gets the comparisons to the 2 greats you mentioned above.

Truth be told, most of the best bands/groups break up or quit before they start to suck.

Very few can sustain an interesting career for over a decade.

Well I never thought of it that way. His mother was very involved with the black panther party, this and the fact that he was real, not just some wannabe thug, made him a savior in the eyes of black america. I think he was killed because of his influence on the black youth.
