Ah, Ricky Martin was hailed the new King of Pop in 1999. So what? MJ is the Godfather of Pop wink That's what some article called him a couple of months ago, lining out his influence on the industry today. I thought that was cool. I could post it if anyone wants.

MJ as the Godfather of Pop? That title implies an overarching influence on the composition of popular music. I don't think MJ can lay claim to that. Several artists who preceded him and influenced him could conceivably lay claim to that title.

I could see cats like Louis Armstrong and Chuck Berry laying claim to the title, and although Michael's a towering legend, I'm not quite feelin' that description for him.

too funny, the media never fails to make me laugh...

that being said, I think justin's seXXXy, has a good voice and can dance. I'll be the first to admit that he's co-opting moves from those who went before him, but who DOESN'T do this? The live show I saw of him at The Quest in MPLS was bumpin. As pop music goes, JT is one of about 8 artists who get mainstream play that doesn't make my ears bleed.

I just figure, I'll wait and see what he does next. He may fall on his face and make many people (the press included) happy as hell cos then they could tear him apart. Or he may continue to grow and advance (he is kinda young still fer fucks sake) and shock us all by still being a presence decades from now. I just hope if he does last that he doesn't mutilate his face like the "former" king of pop, cos I like people with noses wink

...i feel dirty for writing all that, I have to go wash now...

"Prince of Pop"...maybe. But, Justin ain't the king of anything. He's just not there, yet...and may never be. Goodness gracious, make him earn it. Usher's more talented for crying out loud.

He looks like Joey Lawrence in the above pic. In fact, his music sounds a lot like Joey Lawrence too. His popularity will fade in a few years, just like Joey's did.

Okay, look, RS has ALLLWAYS been media whores.

Remember Linda Rondstadt? She was on the cover in a pair of hot pants and a satin jacket. She was total pop. Ditto with Carly Simon, um, PRINCE... whatever. Rolling Stone has always been mainstream music, with a slight edge. They'll tell you who is up and coming, as long as that up and coming has a publicist and they have some buzz going.

If you want to pick a mag that has some sort of credibility to their musical choices, maybe Spin magazine, or Alternative Press, or something like that. but RS is pop-poop and will ALWAYS be happy to put someone on the cover that will sell more issues.

And the MaryKate and Ashley article was a valid spoof - the countdown to their 18th birthday is inDEED more important that Madonna's latest video.

secondly

Off the Wall was good, but shit, come on, there were four good songs on there. Can you even NAME five songs off of that record? Thriller was fantastic. BAD? Please. Again, 4 good songs. So, to say that JT better come up with albums as good as BAD ain't really asking for much...

And I dont think MJ wrote any of those tunes! And... and, lastly, there's NO WAY JT said he just came up with beatboxing. He's totally pandering to the black market, INCLUDING the beatboxing and the MJ tribute in his singing and dancing. He would probably be the first to tell you this.

Come to think of it, has anyone even READ the frickin article?

JT said that in an interview i saw on an old post, not in the article.

Michael did write most tunes after Off The Wall at least, i think he wrote Dont Stop Till U Get enough, Burn This Disco Out & Workin Day & Night, Shes out Of My Life i think..hmmm.

I thought every song on Bad was good. Every song on Dangerous was good (except for Gone 2 Soon maybe & She Drives Me Wild) Thriller.Michael Jackson.

Somebody said they thought Usher is better, yes i think so 2. His live show was awesum and has a beautiful voice, the dancin was wonderful 2.

*shudders at Linda Ronstadt* At least once a month, some middle aged person comes up to me and says, "You know who you look like? You look exactly like Linda Ronstadt. Do you know who she is?" All throughout high school, 5 of my teachers called me "Linda". Riiight.

1st: This is comming from Rolling Stone, the same people who put mary-kate and ashley ona cover

2nd: Stop the justing hating. He does NOT coppy Mj, whoever thinks that needs to take their head out of the toliet. Half of y'all would hate him so much if he wasn't in NSYNC. get over it already, the boy has talent rolleyes

3rd: In a sense he is, "Pop" is short for popular, popular music today consists of britney spears, chingy, and creed, yeah, he's the king of that, big whoop

4th: Mj is not on top anymore, deal with it all-fucking-ready. Prince isn't hot anymore, janet isn't as hot, madonna has resorted to selling children's books, why the ehll should MJ still have that title?
This is this generation's music and pop culture
You want the good ole' days? but some vinyl and quit bitching already.
The heavy weights of the 80s (and now 90s) aren't as relevant as they once were, deal with it.
IMHO, MJ shouldn't have that title for today, when you look at what the real meaning of king of pop is you would agree. this apparently is today's, once again, deal with it.
EVERYONE falls, 20 years from now justin won't have that title

Who has notice since Justin almost ruined his career pretending to be MJ at his first solo performance..

Justin NOW is trying to rip off Prince / Stevie Wonder rolleyes

I have notice a few "musicans" trying to rip of the One Nite Alone vibe!

Britney did when she did her classic songs in that syle on a TV Appearance

Justin is all about that now! He has a band and tries to get that vibe of Prince & Stevie

Alicia Keys she is a complete rip on the ONA vibe

*** By the Way what happened to Rolling Stone??? I bet al those real acts of the 1970's must be laughing their azz's off at where that magazine has went  rolleyes

Same can be said for Prince's Hall Of Fame thing as well as Grammies and any other awards. People like to have some fake 'official validation', even tho at the end of the day, in every case, they are just tools to sell more product. Sad.

lol, you have got to be shitting me! off the wall only had FOUR good songs?! off the wall is a bonafide classic with a wealth of memorable, brilliant material. who cares if MJ didnt write those songs - do you think JT wrote all of his?

justin wouldnt be ANYTHING as a solo artist without the work of timbaland and the neptunes - anyone could have sung those songs and had hits with them. and does anyone really think JT would have goten anywhere without the mega-PR blitz behind him?

Though strangely enough, with this huge hype machine, a double world tour, 100% positive publicity and all these titles being flung about before his album was even released, Justified's worldwide sales are not all that much more than what Invincible sold. Like him or not (I do'nt really), Eminem is the biggest selling male solo artist in the world today.

Doesn't change the fact that his music is crap.

I actually don't agree at all with your assessment. Liz Taylor came up with this bullshit title for one, and that was after many years of Jacko selling like, a gazillion records. Justin's had one friggin' hit album as a solo artist. I think its a bit premature to crown him as king of anything (other than king of really bad music).
