Have you seen the PBS documentary series? Very cool stuff.

Only bits and pieces.

Ken Burns really did his research, maybe that's next on the list.

This winter, I'd recommend you rent each one.

Thanks but I'll have to buy it and watch it until I've taken in everything that it has to offer.

Mingus, Grant Green are just blowing my mind right now.

It's amazing what people don't know about music history, you could write a book with what I don't know.

Even better. I've got it and it's worth its weight in gold.

I still am amazed by the sheer amount of brilliant music the jazz genre has to offer.

Have you given Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver and Cannonball Adderley a whirl yet?

You could fill a library about what I don't yet know about the genre and I've been listening to it for over a decade now!

Not heard of them, until now. I'll check them out.

I'm really interested in how funk came out of jazz.

Now I know everything came out of Jazz in one form or another.

Ah, yes. My evil plan to bankrupt Slave by tempting him to make additional music purchases is working as planned.

I don't know anything about Freddy Hubbard (unless I heard his music and didn't know it was him). What should I get?

As guitarslinger44 mentioned,"Red Clay" would be a good place to start. It features Herbie Hancock,Ron Carter & Lenny White. The current CD has a live bonus track version of the title track which features George Benson on guitar.
Very funky.
"Straight Life" is another good choice and on "First Light", the addition of a string section is very nice.

Hubbard is pretty underrated appearantly.I wish I could classify exactly what type of jazz he performs, but Im not real sure about the different styles."Red Clay" sounds alot like Hancock's first few albums and a bit like
Miles' Quintet. It's not as abstract as Davis' later works.

I would definitely recommend "Red Clay" & "First Light"
