Same thing that divides any other genre, melody, instrumentation and lyrics.

Common, KRS-One, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, Leaders of the New School, Main Source, Brand Nubian (Grand Puba, Sadat X), Digable Planets, Dilated Peoples, Planet Asia, Mood, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, BDP, Queen Latifah, Outkast, a lot of underground/indie artists, etc.
