Who is the grestest singer? I don't mean your favourite artist. Like their music or not, who do you think is the most talented artist vocally?
I had this dicussion with my mate the other day and it caused a BIG debate. We both loved Elton John, Billy Joel and Marvin Gaye. But we agreed that they were not AMAZING vocally. I picked Neil Diamond, Marti Pellow and Stevie Wonder. My mate then proceeded to tell me how much Stevie's voice grated on her. She said Stevie couldn't sing. She said Mcchael Jackson, Mariah Carey and Mark Almond were the best. We both agreed that people Like Prince, jimi, Bowie, Lennon, were good, but worked, only as a package. So who REALLY can sing? Pick ONE voice! . [This message was edited Sun Dec 7 18:37:39 PST 2003 by SquirrelMeat] .

I'm not saying she's #1, but I'm sure Teena Marie ranks pretty high
And like it or not, Mariah too ~KiKi

i love Cher's voice too. she acheives naturally and with ease, that inflection in her voice that the Christina's and Mariah's try to do with their voices, but it sounds okay when she does it. they just sound stupid doing it.

Donna Summer
Such an underappreciated vocalist. It really pisses me off when people just brush her off as "disco" or "Giorgio Moroder's pawn". It's true that she produced her best stuff w/ him, but she also wrote 8 of the songs on Bad Girls and continues to write (and coproduce) many of her tracks.

Go to church if you want the real deal. As for famous singers I'd go with Stephanie Mills and Stevie Wonder-- Sorry Niecy and Luther

David Bowie. | |

"greatest" hmm, what defines greatness? operatic range or someone who can make almost any song sound good? i'll go with the latter and pick...

Chris Cornell. He's like a soul singer in a hard rock band, if U don't believe me, listen 2 anything Soundgarden put out especially their later stuff. Also his solo record Euphoria Mourning.
Other than that, Prince obviously, Billie Holliday. U always know when U're listeining 2 Billie. Also in the jazz realm this guy named Mark Murphy. Uses his voice like an instrument...oh and while we're mentioning people who use their voices like instruments, Bobby McFerrin (and I'm NOT talking about "Dont' Worry Be Happy") Bobby's friggin AMAZING!

I agree,Donna is really underrated as a vocalist. This woman has an AMAZING voice.I think her voice would have been more appreciated if she had done R&B/soul music,as opposed to disco (a style of music that many people dismiss).

He's getting a bit rough around the edges of late but the man can sure hold a tune and has a broad vocal range, too. I always preferred Robin's voice, tho'.

Paul Rodgers. He was in Free and Bad Company, then later the Firm with Jimmy Page. If that means nothing to you, think of the song "Alright Now", from the Wrigley's Spearmint advert a few years ago. I saw him (with Bad Company) last year and he was amazing, even at 53.

Michael Jackson Prince TTD Matt Goss Stevie Wonder I LIKE Matt Goss' voice, but I don't think he's worthy of being in that list. Replace him with maybe Bruce Springsteen or Marvin Gaye and you've got my Top 5.
