Even rock critics have sold out! Notice, lately, rock critics, who used to be real snooty and elitist, now fall in line, defending the latest trend: Britney, Beyonce, Missy, 50 Cent. You have mainstream radio and critics seeing eye to eye more than ever. Critics used to be more subversive in their picks. I would bet it is the corporate nature of society that has made these critics give in to the latest pop trend; instead of great music. Outkast being an exception. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Maybe this has more to do with the fact that anybody and everybody can be a "rock critic" without really having to know much about rock music. Just like you only have to be cute to be an MTV VJ and not really know jack shit about music. This trend will eventually change. they all do.

Two Words
Rolling Stone I remember when everybody didn't sell their soul to the man and actually had opinions. Sometimes they actually their own and it would go on for pages in a magazine. Another sign.

Ha, yeah. I find people whose taste is quite similar to mine and whose opinion I value and usually recommendations from individuals online are far more effective than any "professional". Rolling Stone are a joke. I mean, they had the Olsen twins on a cover this year There is NO need for paid "Critics"! WE have Message Boards! I'd rather ask someone here.. you mean people still read music mags?

This has been a prob since the business has been getting more and more consolidated. Now that there are only three companies running things (as of the last few weeks) in respect to music production and distribution as well as press, there will be no end to it. Creem Magazine, a former vanguard of conscious criticism (sometimes questionable), is presently only available online. They say that they will bring it back to the old days, but so far, it seems like the same old song and dance.
The problem is that the corporate biz is very quid pro quo. Sometimes, rightfully so as that is how any positive relationship works. It is also very embroiled in corrupt practices at times and when you have critics and magazines wishing to keep up their standard of living and expenses to stay afloat, you can't always say the truth. The stakes are much higher when you got advertisers funding your efforts as well. You gotta learn to read between the lines to see the truth. Check out a review of a bad band. You will see certain word pop up now and again, writing more about the band's background than the music, etc. Also, remember that mags are NOT made to inform, but to advertise. People talk about Lester Bangs being the shite and I agree to a degree, but have you ever read his writing? Whoa...so hard to follow. Sorry. I'm blabbing...
