I wasn't really comparing the music, just the overall feel of the album. You never know what to expect next from the first song to the last, and all the music in between is a total escape from reality. When I first heard Sign O the Times I got this feeling. I remember playing that tape every day almost for 3 years, and even then hearing something new that I had missed before. And the lyrics were nasty, sometimes funny and about real life, not this preachy religion stuff. That's what the Outkast record does for me.

Another cool thing is that it's a full album. I heard the singles and downloaded some other songs, but not until I heard the whole record from beginning to end did I really appreciate what they're doing and how funked up they can be. Just like Sign, 1999 and even the Gold Experience did...

its his journey not yours. i'm sayin 2 u or any freakin Orger here if U R gonna complain bitch play judge over another mans life and music move the fuck on then? easy stuff...this living in the past stuff is ill. I love his old stuff 2 but i "learned" 2 understand respect and admire that a natural & pure artist on his level r just all over the map doing any & everything "they" feel.

if its u or anyone here that act like they know whats best more then Prince himself? {{{shake yourself}}} Then get real. Prince could do what U an what everybody else wants...another DirtyMind? 1999? Sign O' Times? Lovesexy? but really 4what? done fun eras...if he did what U want he'd b only half of what he is today...only a sucka would settle 4 that.

The mans about growth & challange's his own personal genius. hey Emancipation thru Rave era, thats his not my biz. i won't judge his freedom & what music he makes & puts out...why? common sense its "his journey" not mines. if the brothas happy i'm happy. Don't b sorry cuz if Prince felt Rave was adventurous 4 him...that holds more weight then what u say...

I don't dig all his music, but i still respect the man 4 doing what he wants...find a artist who will kiss your ass...he won't. B more open minded and don't get so wrapped tight in "his" music.

If u got the balls 2 play judge have bigger ones and put a cd out that blows Rave away...seeing your skilled with a drop genius inya...should B eazy u think?

Dude let me turn you into current events.. the org is a Prince discussion web site, not a Prince asskisser web site!

"Rave" was a damn leftover B-side and Prince was so hardup for new material he re-released it and named the album after it. He set his standards high and he just doesn't meet them anymore. Maybe he's run out of gas or just doesn't care, that's fine, I was just saying I know he can put together a bunch of songs at least as good as he used to, but he deosn't seem to care..

And I don't think "tha Brothas happy" I think he's miserable and seems really angry and opinionated lately. Probably due to the fact that he's ruined his own career and left many many fans out in the Mpls cold..

hey now, I wont say if he's happy or miserable, and I don't speak for the man at all. I talk about his music. I absolutely agree with you, that, IF he put out another Purple Rain ("Gold Experience" comes to mind) there are those that would say, "hey, he's back to his roots! AWESOME, but i WISH he'd explore NEW avenues",

AS WELL AS

If he put out a totally explorative, ass to the wind, play what comes out and don't think about it again, (NEWS comes to mind) people will ALSO say, "HEY! He's exploring shit that I've never heard him do! Now, if ONLY he'd put some Erotic City on there"

So you're right - he can't please everyone, and he shouldn't try. He should do what he wants, which is what I assume that he does. HOWEVER, that said, i DO wonder how much he second guesses himself NOW versus a brilliant record like SOTT or Around the World, where he was SOOO on top, pop-chart wise, icon-wise, influence-wise - he coulda released a record of him taking a dump and peeps woulda bought that shit up (! HEY! a play on words!)

MY POINT is that, when you examine the songs - APART from the man and what he's doing, where he is in life, etc, it would SEEM that he's had brilliantly creative times, and he's had, um, NOT so brilliantly creative times, (Like EMANCIPATION, where he followed the "song title must be the first lyric on the song" rule on over 50% of the songs. Sorry - for a three disc set, 60 mins on each disc, that shit starts to stick out as "what, you run out of ideas on how to introduce a song?")

Again, this is just my opinion. if you think the man's loo smells like Christmas, hey, no flies on that, you go right ahead. I STILL think he's brilliant and STILL think his best work lies ahead. So, no, I'm not saying he's washed up, I'm saying, his work sounds TOO second-guessed and TOO concerned with current musical trends.

(altho, again, NEWS negates that entire statement.)

Am I the ONLY one who thinks Dre can't sing worth a DAMN? Is everybody tone deaf?

Aw, hell no. He can't sing, and it shows up even more on ballads - where your chops, or lack of it, are exposed.

But still, I like TLB. I don't rank it as a "masterpiece", but to me it's very good, and even excellent in some spots.

Hmmm...that's interesting. I still think Prince could do so much more, but he's still doing good, or should I say beyond GOOD.

I don't agree with this...
His album sounds more like those Prince rip-offs from back in the '80's...

Y'know alot of folks are sayin that but it just aint true.Don't get me wrong, the cd definitly has a Prince vibe to it,espaecially in terms of song arrangement and eclectisism. But vocally,Bootsy Coolins takes the credit.Just pick up "ahh.. the name is bootsy" if youn don't believe me.

That's what I said. But, when Prince makes ANY cd these days, lots of folks are disappointed. He's gone into so many directions, and continues to challenge so many directions, that his fan base is confused and develops a liking for ONE style over the other, and well - shit - can't please all the people all the time.

I still like Dre's record. It's got the quirkiness and playfulness, and pervertedness, of an 80's Prince record. That's all.

*Turn me 2 current events huh? nice 2 see the keeper of this silly thread title stick his head out. In the holiday spirit let me break it down 2 u...

Rave being a old cut is truly old news 2 me. so no ponits there. Prince being hard-up 4 new material? I highly dout that. He has the right 2 use old stuff if it fits into "his" master plan.

U speak of Prince not living up 2 his high standards? Do u know Prince that well on a personal level 2 back this as fact? Or is it what i think it is...a spoil fanatic living in the past, and a limited one who plays picky critic at all new music that ain't of the 80's sound.

U ask has he ran out of gas? I ask is he a car now?
he doesn't care u say? he does care about the present & future but he don't care 2 make the same music of his past...its real simple 2 get i swear.

of course he still can string a bunch of songs together...but 2 your liking ??? who knows but
your keywords is "used 2" that speaks of the "Past" so its unlikely.

U saying flat out the brotha's "Unhappy" "Angery"...I have 2 ask u how can speak 2 this? U dont know him right? does he call u 4 advice?...hmm U have serious personal info of the tabloidish nature. U proud of yourself? U take personal time 2 climb into anothers life 2 play detective...that makes u the worst type of fan cuz u make up shit and talk shit with zero facts. 2 serious about anothers life & music...Kinda scarry!

at the end of the day ask yourself could u make music any better then what u say is Prince's worse rehashed music?
I think we both know the truth. not askin 4 ass kissin but u got 2 B more realistic. Prince ain't dumb if he wanted his star far brighter then he knows what his options R.but he don't, respect that. if his mpls fans feel cheated move on...Prince ain't tryin 2 b "the peoples purple puppet"

2 get u current i been around the Org from almost at the start, and seen enough through the years 2 know...so don't step 2 me with this new-B talk..."Dude"

Last, if u knew me u would know 4 fact i'm no ass kisser. i don't like all his music, at ONA when he got preachy about Xmas etc... i tuned him out. I don't get blinded or gungho over anyone...Nor do i have a interest 2 get up in his personal life. U will never read me type bs words tearing down his work or journey as a artist, say because "He's not making music like Outkast" etc... People the man has 2 grow up and get older as we all do. deal with it or don't support his vision.

2 me hes a true artist. no matter if i prefer his old stuff i'll always have respect 4 his passion and musical genius, with that said i'm down 4 the ride his journey will provide all who care 2 b open.

Reply, but i'm done son.

To people that have probably never heard Prince's stuff, The Love Below is a revelation! Especially when you put it up against most of the hip hop stuff that comes out nowadays. Musicians are finally coming back in the music biz! Granted Andre may not be the best singer, but he'll probably get better. TLB was a big undertaking and only his first shot at it. it DOES have some Prince-like sounds to it but it also sounds like Andre too.
