SOOOOOOOUUUULLLLL TRRRRAAAIIINNN! NO! Not that kinda train, The T.V. show Soul Train
I never understood the appeal of Soul Train from the late eighties up until now, you know watching artist lip sync and people dancing to the lastest R n' B song all seemed like a bunch of nonsense to me, but after watching it tonight for the first time in many years, all I can say is NOW I UNDERSTAND!

uhh...i don't know about you, but as a guy growing up in the 70s and 80s...umm...Soul Train was NEVER too much about the performances for me at all (as you said most were lip synced although there were actually occasions back in the 70s when artists actually did REALLY perform live on that show)...sure it great to actually see Soul artists on TV (back then there were VERY few outlets for us to see Soul artists at all...remember this is before there was cable & videos and music channels etc)...so that was cool to see the stars, lip synced or not...Soul Train was kinda like a 'time capsule' of soul music & fashions etc...
but... what Soul Train was REALLY about To ME was the Dancers...I mean cmon man...let's be real, we can't pretend for a second that it was about the 'indepth interviews' that Don Cornelious did in between the lipsincs...and let's not pretend that we were all holding our breath wondering if the couple would be able to unscramble the scramble board in time for them to win their great prizes (did anyone ever NOT figure it out in time and have to leave WITHOUT their stash of UltraSheen cosmetics???)... no no my young grasshpper..Soul Train was (and probably still is) always ALL about THE DANCERS...and for me that means the lady Dancers... Yeah...there was the 'shimmyshimmy dress' sister, and oh yeah the long haired asian dancer...oh..and, god bless her, there was the then unknown (but a star in my young eyes) Rosie Perez... so i'm not sure how you initially didn't get the appeal about all that...but it sounds like you're starting to get now i guess heheh. Come to think of it, i haven't watched it in a while my damn self...wheres that tv guide...

In the 70s,many artists chose to sing their songs live.On a 1975 episode,Minnie Riperton sings her hit "Lovin You" live, and it will give you chills. She sounds amazing!

Is there any other kind??? Growing up in the 70s I never missed an episode. Not only did I watch it for the performances but for the soul train dancers and their funky trends. Back then you knew the dancers by name. Back then they looked like the homies next door. Now ever ST dancer is a super model wannabe.

Is there any other kind??? Well, I had to clarify myself, since originally this thread was posted in the LSR forum. Anyways, I grew up in the 70's and I never missed an episode either. My dad has a couple volumes of the earlier episodes with some cool peeps on there and they were actually perfoming. Unfortunately, now it's just a soft porn comedy show, but it does come in handy from time to time.
