Laura Nyro Woohoo. I can't remember who it was doing a Laura Nyro
promo trip here on the org, but I just want to say to that person: Thank You! I just got her best off 2cd set "Stone Souled Picnic" and it rrrocks. I can hear the comparisons as have been discussed here on the org, with her and Tori Amos. But she's certainly in a league of her own. Five songs into the first disc, on my way home, listnin in the car I was like "Yup, I've got another favorit to add to my list of great performers". Such cool arrangements, clever lyrics and I just fell in love with her voice from the first verse onward. Every once in a while, you pick up a clue here or there and discover greatness you hadn't even heard about till then. This is one of those occasions. Absolutely fcking brilliant. So, beyond her Best Off album, what do you [if you know her] recommend I'd buy next? What is her "Sign O The Times" or "Parade", which is her "Rubber Soul" or which is her "Blue"?? and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I purchased two of Laura Nyro's albums a while ago, due in large part to gypsyfire's tireless promotion of this brilliant artist (thanks!), and I have actually helped others to discover Laura's work as well.
I would like to second the recommendations of Eli and the Thirteenth Confession and New York Tendaberry -- truly great stuff! Start with these. I actually heard Stevie Wonder talking about Laura in a recent interview. His song "If You Really Love Me" was directly inspired by her work. She was one of the artists who inspired him to find (and fight for) his own voice, leading to all of his brilliant 70s work.
