LIVING COLOUR ripped LA a new asshole!!! LC threw down their brand of hard-core rock and the LA funk-faithful were there to receive it. The band played a wide variety of songs from its previous three releases (before taking an unplanned 10 years break) plus a good portion of songs from it's latest release COLLIDE-O-SCOPE.
The set ran a bit over two hours without break. Lead singer Corey Glover was in fine form on their tune "Nothingness" (he just may be the best soul singer out there now that Luther Vandross is incapacitated). Bandleader guitarist Vernon Reid was a magnificent display of guitar wizardry and his slew of gadgets and gizmos is only matched by bass player Doug Wimbish's love for pedals and tape loops. Solidly backed up percussionist drummer Will Calhoun the band sounds as fresh as it did in the 90s. Perhaps even more, given the topicality of its new songs. The set included 9-11 related songs like "A ? Of When", which challenges the status quo and powers-that-be into a re-evaluaton, "In Your Names" is a rage-filled crusade to intervene in other countries. "Operation Mind Control" suggests America has lost it's soul and been lulled into a subserient stupor. LC also included a very frantic cover of the AC/DC rock anthem "Back In Black". "Pocket of Tears", featured a cover of "Sex Machine" at the break and a moshpit flared up during "Type" and "Times Up". This is, quite simply, one of the best bands out there. Given the spate of rap-metal bands, it's hard to imagine any these forming if there hadn't been a Living Colour. Thank you God, they're back..back in black, indeed! I saw Living colour at the Paladium on their Times Up tour and met them after the show! Corey went OFF on Open Letter to a Landlord. I've seen them 3 times since then and they NEVER disapoint. I got pics with them if you wanna see.
Man, I would have loved to have heard Nothingness live. I just listened to the acoustic version a few days ago. Brilliant. Did you see when Corey and Vernon were on MTVs Rockline? They mentioned that someone sent them fanmail there at the studio and they read it and sent something back? That was me! | |
