do the british have better musicial taste than americians

the americian album charts have missed some of the greatest albums ever released over the years. what does that tell us about taste?
..
...here are a few examples:
...
...forever changes - love...uk number 24
...blue lines - massive attack...uk number 13
...mind the bollocks - sex pistols...uk number 1
...trout mask replica - cp beefheart..uk number 21
...marquee moon - television...uk number 28
...the smiths - the smiths...uk number 2
...loveless - my bloody valentine...uk number 24
...moon safari - air...uk number 6
...parklife - blur...uk number 1
...hot rats - frank zappa...uk number 9
...steve mcqueen - prefab sprout...uk number 21
...the clash - the clash...uk number 12
...sunflower - beach boys...uk number 29
...
...none of the above albums made the us top 100 album chart.

there have been some truly horrible things on the British Top 10 as well.

But generally speaking, i would rather listen to most things on the UK top 20 than the US top 20.

I wouldnt say they have better taste. Depending upon the genre , it might be argued that they have better musicians, but that probably only applies to the Classic Rock catagory.

America will always have Jazz.

I don't know about taste, but they do create better music. The majority of my infleunces are British, believe it or not. Ironically enough, they're always keeping their ears open to American music.

Exactly. It's the media. Who knows where exactly it started, but here in the US everything has to be represented by young, sexy people. It isn't like that in other parts of the world. Not to say they don't have that kind of thing, they just look past the image more than we do. It's all about promotion. If record companies don't promote an artist, i.e. pay for radio airplay, the artist will not be heard. If you're sexy and older, they wont promote you as much either. There are exceptions, of course. But the majority of money goes to promote a select few artists.

While the British are mo' fickle and spoiled than the Americans, British however are waaay mo' LOYAL to the ol'schoolers. They sho are a loyal audience!

Every ol' school artists from US who got forgotten is still getting dues and props from British ppl.

Tina Turner 4 example, someone who wouldn't be mentioned along the lines with Aretha, Gladys, Chaka and Patti even tho she paid mo' dues than some of them, struggled in her own country but at the end who gave her the right dues and welcomed her with open arms? British folks.

The late Nina Simone is another example of what I'm talking about. Altho she admits that British ppl get on her nerves with some of their traditions, they however are more of a following audience than Americans. She also said "They welcome any changes and chances,,,they're chameleon spirits".

My homegirl Chaka Khan said that pre4ming in front of British folks is a BIG challange becoz she knows that she'll give her best to full effect otherwise she's outta there. The ppl there are so much into their biz "You don't get followed by a fuckin' parade like New Yorkers or Californians". Also, the lifestyle there helped her to be sober.

Mary J Blige said mo' than once that British audience are "Real as a pinch in yo ass. They would boo you out the door if you ain't got you shit 2ghether". Same as Chaka, Mary faces alot of challange while pre4ming in London.

Yep,,,some of the British Audience truely rock headbang

I think british musicians are some of the best.

Take the new Aqualung album for example, I know it has to do with the label, but both of their cd's hasnt hit the us, and they are a very talented and musical group. I think their song Brighter Than Sunshine would get a lot of airplay.

just a thought

I think we just have a unique media.

The BBC is funded by a license fee. Each household has to pay about $100 a year to the Beeb and we get 5 analogue radio stations and 2 analogue tv stations all free of adverts. The radio stations are:-

Radio 1 - new music. Have 2 promote new music. All the biggest names in UK dance from Pete Tong (house) to Gilles Peterson (jazz) to Tim Westwood (hip-hop) are all on there. They have an official goverment remit to provide youth music, rather than a sponsor target audience to please/

Radio 2 - for the maturer music lover. Classic 50s/60s/70s & 80s along with new acts like COldplay & Travis. Also lots of documentaries on the origins of music

Radio 3 - Classical music, emphasis on new composers & jazz
Radio 4 - serious talk shows
Radio 5 - sport talk

With this system, we just have a whole different method of hearing music. It ain't a cultural thing, it's just the way we run the media. Everyone slags off Radio 1 in this country, but having travelled, I realise how lucky we are.

No-one over hear really grumbles about having to cough up their C-Note, because they see TV stations and hear radio stations with commercials in 'em!

I think that American music these days is more innovative. And more of a vehicle for emancipation.

Though I love the British melodic feel, so I listen more to the British.

You might say that Americans have a better musical taste than the British, and me.

By the way, 'We Are The World' is really my definition of Bad Taste. It has the most standard melody and the most pukeful lyrics I know.

Don't blame us for our singles charts as radio mostly controls that. There are very few sell through singles anymore and the only ones that are ever sold in most stores anymore have something to do with "American Idol"!
