You all have to listen to more classical and jazz.

I do notice that tastes tend to lean to pop culture styles, but if you listen deep to Prince music, you notice different jazz and classical ideas in certain songs. I would think that revelation would make you want to venture into listening to more classical or traditional jazz. I say this, because few here mention jazz or classical. Why is it you can tolerate strings on a P song, but not listen to a symphony?

Better to find out new things. Will make you all more spiritually, and emotionally whole. Lot's of good music out there. Search it out.

And no, that music is NOT boring. Give it a shot.

If you want to listen to some great Jazz
pick up Nicholas Payton's Sonic Trance!
If you like Prince's Xpectation & News
you'll LOVE Sonic Trance. It's modern/experimental
jazz at it's best!

I must admit...I listen to more classical than jazz. sad Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto no. 1 in E minor op. 64 is probably my favorite. I can't wait for a Neptunes remix! dancing jig

I agree. I think that anyone who is more well-rounded in his/her musical tastes will have a better appreciation for Prince's music. I mean, if all someone does is listen to pop radio all the time, then the majority of Prince's music (especially as of late) is probably going to go over their heads.

I LOVE Vivaldi! drool

I also really dig movie scores. Elliot Goldenthal, Greame Revell and Thomas Newman are my faves.

Jazz? I have a few Mile Davis cds.

I also love anything Indian/middle eastern sounding. Jai Uttal rocks my world. http://www.jaiuttal.com/

I love jazz and classical music..

I really love it when a musical group thats in the pop/rock/experimental scene blends the two.. its just beautiful

but pure jazz and classical are foundations of a profound genre that will usually sound timeless. smile

You're making an assumption. I listen to Dvorak, Wagner and Beethoven, but why would I discuss that here in a Prince forum? Just because people aren't talking about more refined music here, doesn't mean they are not listening to it. wink

I'm a big fan of Jazz! As far as classical goes I listen to it when reading or studying and have been a fan since highschool, I still get chills when listening to Bach's double violin concerto.

Classical: Stravinsky, Gershwin, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Bela Bartok, Rocmaninov, Bernard Herrman, Ennio Morricone, Frank Zappa.

Jazz: Charlie Parker, Buddy Rich, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Various big band, jazz. Dislike most pop jazz. Probably why I dislike News.

While you are generalizing, don't look for me on the pop threads as I have more respect for the wealth of music history.

I've been on a Jazz thing for a while, here's a partial list.

The Monk
Coltrane
Miles (he has more albums than anyone on earth)
Charlie Parker
Count Basie

Then there's my new obsession, Afro-Cuban Jazz. It's horn-based, heavy percussion and energy just pouring from every note.

Spanish Harlem Orchestra
Auturo S (I can't remember how to spell his name)
a handful of compilations.

Classical has always been a main-stay with Pagininni, Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi and a classical guitarist named Elliot Fisk.
