Any Yoko Ono fans in the house?

Anyone dig her music? I'm preparing for an onslaught of Yokohaters and Onobashers out there: "she can't sing", "screams and calls it music", "yoko oh no!" etc... She's not actually that bad at all. Give her a chance and you'll be pleasantly surprised. I thought much the same thing at first, but there's a trick to it - you get out of the mentality of thinking "this is crap" and try to like it. Somehow this works.

If you don't dig the early experimental screaming stuff, there's a lot more to her - the gritty feminist rock of the 70's, heartbreak of 1981's Season of Glass (John's smashed glasses on the cover), savvy 80's pop, and lately her work has been remixed to great success.

Come on - there has to be some Onofans out there!

[EDIT: Oh, and she did NOT break up the Beatles. She was a convenient scapegoat for sulking Beatles fans everywhere.]

She so did break up the Beatles in a not so direct way. She won John's heart and took him away from the other Fab 3, forever.

of course... love Yoko... some amazing things. Some of my faves:

Thin Ice (of course)
Death of Samantha
Turned the Corner (chilling song...)
Yang Yang
Approximately Infinite Universe
You're the One (her best vocals, IMHO)
Give Me Something
Hell in Paradise
I Don't Know Why (another chilling song...)
Is this What We Do?
Ask the Dragon
Wouldnit
Beautiful Boy
I'm Moving On
Coffin Car
Peter the dealer
She Get's Down on Her knees

Ok... that would make a great intro to Yoko CD... hmmm... think i'll burn one smile

Yoko's "Rising" album is absolutely one of the most fantastic records by anyone, ever. The EP of remixes from that album is astounding as well.

I can't think of anything more boring than people who jump on the hating-Yoko bandwagon. It just smacks of laziness and media mind control. Nothing's more easy than a Yoko Ono joke, folks. Get a clue.

You gotta look past the picture popular mass media paints and go beyond the late night talk show cliches and take in her art and music with an open mind...then you won't be so shocked.

"Have courage, have faith...you're rising..." beautiful words from a beautiful mind.

Mmm... I love Rising too. Sean Lennon and IMA do a wonderful job of instrumenting the thing as well. I picked it up on CD for $2.50 at a second-hand market, probably one of the best deals of my record collecting career. It's a shame it's out of print these days, but it's fairly easy to get on Ebay.

Ironically, the weakest aspect of the album is the title track: the epic piece Rising goes for 14 minutes, and I usually love her vocal freakouts, but this one I find too intense and long. But the sequel, Rising II, found on Blueprint for A Sunrise, is gorgeousness.

I can't think of anything more boring than people who jump on the hating-Yoko bandwagon. It just smacks of laziness and media mind control. Nothing's more easy than a Yoko Ono joke, folks. Get a clue.

Right on. Testify, brother! woot!

A fine selection. There's a nice best-of compilation called Walking On Thin Ice available from Rykodisc that has a similar playlist. It's also a great intro to her music.

Has anyone ever seen any of her videos?

Oh man! You've seen the Hell In Paradise video? What's it like? Where did you manage to see it? I've never seen any of her videos, but from what I've heard, there are videos for Goodbye Sadness, Walking On Thin Ice and No, No, No. Possibly My Man as well.

As a conceptual artist I find her interesting, not really as a musician. I have listened to some of her music and found it difficult, whether her art and music is intrinsically linked I don't know. I prefer her as an artist to a musican though.

Just saw the woman herself here in Detroit on Wednesday night. She was here to dedicate her art piece "Freight Train". It's on display in front of the Institute of Arts. She has composed music that is played with the display. . .very eerie and hopeful at the same time, appropriate for the art piece.

i remember it on MTV when it came out... there used to be a show, i think it was called NOW HEAR THIS or something like that... or perhaps it was an earlir version of that show... but they played new Videos, and I vaguely remember seeing Hell in Paradise. I really don't remember anything specific about it though, just vague images in my head of it.

Isn't it just. I don't own it, but I sat down in Borders and read the whole thing. I'd love to listen to the bonus disc - maybe I can sneak in a Discman. God I'm a tightass.
