all i've got to say about bloodflowers is robert's head on a stick if "spilt milk" isn't on there.
there's also heavy world coming up & possession (on the box but from these sessions and likely to be on the reissue) you're so happy you could kill me (very cool, but different) and 11 demos including the original non-curve mix of just say yes an extended "last day of summer" .. hmm am i forgetting something? Keep your headphones on.

i don't know why spilt milk isn't on the box .. possession must be a motherfucker of a song.
but that guitar on spilt milk, you know those licks. they fuckin kill me every time you should check out the demo for it. horn solos instead of guitar, it's neat. [This message was edited Thu Nov 20 23:54:27 PST 2003 by smokeverbs] Keep your headphones on.

What's that all about? found it on audiogalaxy just before that site went dead. it's about 9 and a half minutes long, has more instrumentation. one of these days we're really gonna have to do a trade on whatever we're each missing... Keep your headphones on.

how do you save the demos on curehits.com as MP3 files?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
it appears that you can't anymore. when the site first went up, they were available as downloadable files, but now they just stream. that's really stale. Keep your headphones on.

I'm very glad that the tracks from Standing on the Beach will be on there, like Throw Your Foot and A Man Inside My Mouth.
Now I wish The Smiths would put out a box set already. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

And finally, here's the cover...
I like it. | |

nifty cover...
I realize the Cure has a massive legion of fans worldwide, and they have sold tons of albums and sell out arenas, etc, etc, etc... but why is it there is a lack of serious acceptance of The Cure in critical circles... meaning they don't get the attention or accolades, say, of a U2 or REM. The Cure has been more prolific and groundbreaking and influential than either of those bands, IMHO, but they're always sorta left out of conversations of the great bands of the last 30 years. Why? is it Robert's make-up? Seriously. The Cure should be in the rock and roll hall of fame induction group this year. - cmg.

It seems that all of the Cure's contemporaries and peers (U2, REM, The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order) get more credit than them. And it's not fair. I hear all the time that they're a singles band and don't have consistently good albums. The fact is, none of those bands I mentioned have a musical force as strong as Robert Smith. Who else in any of those groups can write, sing, play and produce like him? Nobody. U2 has their politics. REM has their earnestness. The Smiths have their poetry. New Order have their amazing sound. But nobody consistently puts their heart and emotion in their work like Robert Smith. The Cure's very influential to musicians and have possibly the largest cult audience ever. But it's time they get the critical acclaim they deserve. End preach.

Another factor may play into what you're saying.
U2 and REM had a major image overhaul in the 90's. It gave them a whole new audience of alternative kids. The Smiths broke up before they could fade away. Ian Curtis killed himself and New Order essentially quit in '93. But The Cure sort of faded away in the 90's. Their material wasn't as consistent and their output slowed way down. I think it became easy to overlook and forget about them with so many new bands grabbing for our attention in that decade. But I think in this decade (as with Prince), that they've started to make better decisions and produce better work. Bloodflowers, The Trilogy concert, Join The Dots and remastered albums may be what it takes to put them back in the spotlight again.

Possibly my favorite picture of Robert. Already on t-shirts and posters and now immortalized on a box set!
