Pop Radio is NOT a decent source of music.

This is a wake up call!

I'm seeing lots of posts from folks saying "too bad we don't hear from them no more" or "whatever happened to ?" or "is there ANY good music out there?"

The problem is, as long as one company owns all the major music airwaves, you're ONLY going to hear their tunes. It's like always going over to a friends house and hearing only their music and thinking, "wow, there just ain't that much out there".

In this digital age, you have to get up, turn off the mainstream radio station, and go find new music yourself, either thru college radio, internet radio (live365.com), or new music sites, (cmj.com) or ANYTHING. Hell - get up and go down to the record store and ask them what's NOT being pimped by Clear.

Just saying, there's TONS of great music out there. Jane Child is STILL making music, Neo-Soul is in full swing, but because 14-yr-old girls don't like it, you wont see it on MTV or hear it on mainstream pop radio.

There's an frighteningly scathing article in the recent issue of Harper's Monthly all about the evil that is Clear Channel, and how they've dumbed down pop radio to a pavlovian slave dirge in ways that are obvious and not-so-obvious...the whole thing is too insightfully horrifying to just cite a quote or two, so I would suggest you stop by your local bookstore and pick up a copy - Clear Channel has clearly killed modern radio.

...AMEN! im trying to "invest" (in X-radio?)...does anyone have any suggestions about that? i listen to CD's mostly anyway, i might not do it! radio is a popularity contest, with the same ole nominee's,

Some internet radio stations are kinda cool...you gotta just dive in and experiment with all the different options...but I just tend to make compilation CDs for myself every now and then - at least that way I'm in control of what I'm enjoying...

yeah...i think its cool that people like aimee mann, michael mcdonald, cindy lauper, cher (well, for the most part), hall & oats and other 80's acts are finding a following and touring and selling albums...

aimee has mastered using the net to reach out to her fans...heck, even bjork gets zero airplay nowadays..yet she is still a vital part of the music industry...

ive been ignoring radio and mtv for years now...and ive bought more cds this year then ever before...and good stuff:

lizz wright
meshell
eryka
...

and im drawing a blank on the other stuff ive bought this year..but i think forums like this do a much better job publicising music than radio and mtv...

I think the only thing we as consumers can do abut is...buy the albums by artists we like and not download them. Also, the way to fix Clear Channel's radio is to not listen to Clear Channel stations (which should be easy for most of us) or their clones! There are many stations that you think are Clear Channel but are usually owned by some other huge company and they pretty much play all the same shit. Just listen to smaller stations that play good stuff. Don't be a slave to Clear Channel.

The only radio I ever listen to anymore is National Public Radio - and by saying that, I'm sure you can easily gather that I don't listen to radio for music anymore.

I remember being a little kid and filling up entire 90 minute tapes with cool songs I heard on the radio, new stuff, stuff I'd play for my parents to beg them to buy me the albums - I can't see that being done in an environment where the same 12 songs are played over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. A co-worker of mine listens to a CC station at work, and within the space of my eight-hour shift, I heard the same song FOUR TIMES. And it was a classic soul station!

Today's mass media discourages the feeling of discovery, and that really, really sucks.

I admire (?) anyone that can listen to radio without going insane. To me it's a form of torture.

I was listening to NPR today and there was a news story about a new magazine debut called "Tracks" (I think that's how they're spelling it) that's tailored to the 30 and over crowd. The editors were interviewed and mentioned that since the record companies are publicly owned, they've got to meet profit expectations. That means banking on the QUICK BIG BUCKS, which translates into YOUNG PEOPLE. Easily swayed by the "latest new thing", that 15-24 year old age group is what's keeping the big guns in business. Us mouldy oldies take our time and the big guns can't wait around for that.

It's a BID-ness. disbelief

But we all knew that already. . .

Anyway, I'd like to check out this "Tracks" magazine.

The thing that absolutely KILLS me is that EVERYONE i know thinks the SAME DAMN THING! I've seen so many articles about radio where people just say "Man, radio sucks, I don't even listen 2 it anymore." Yet Clear Channel won't change! I listen to pop stations just to keep up on what's new because I think it's important to know that Britney and Madonna did a song together or that that song by JC Chassez from NSYNC is the greatest waste of 4 precious minutes of your life imaginable. But I buy CDs. I am mystefied by people (especially musicians!) that tell me it's been years since they bought a CD. That's really the only way to get what you want and at the same time you're supporting the artists as well. So everyone, go buy a CD today! smile
