American Music Awards...time to pull the plug

Dear Mr. Clark, its over. This was really an embarrassing show. Put it this way, my highlight was HALL AND OATES presenting with Roselyn Sanchez and seeing Jessica ALba.
Lets see where do I begin...

Did anyone show up this year? With the exception of Tim and Faith was anyone THERE, I mean LUTHER had an excuse but whats up Mr. Clark?

Next thing, why OH why must these networks showcase dumb ass Rappers like LIL JOHN, or the wanna be thug BOWWOW, and that other kid no one cares about. And MACY GRAY, sorry to tell U, but that LAME routine about WINNERS AND LOSERS is done every year and is older than your IM HIGH act.

CLAY and RUBEN, oh lord I cant wait for this to be over already. Someone compared CLAY to Barry Manilow, but sorry even BARRY was never that LAME and BARRY at least had years of fame, CLAY it's about time for your 15 minutes to be up, so have a seat next to Kelly Clarkson. And RUBEN whats with your pissy ass attitude on the red carpet, someone hide your burgers.

Next thing, Jimmy Kimmel, who gave this guy a show or a chance. Wow I thought Jimmy Fallon was bad, but wow Jimmy this award goes to U.

I felt bad for LIONEL RICHIE having to go out there and too then hear BOOS because someone else didnt show up, was really sad, LIONEL next time lose your invitation or dont go unless they let U sing.

And another thing, BRITNEY, I know what everyone is thinking, she LIPSYNCHED again, yeah but U knew that, but I counted quite a few LIPSYNCHING performances tonite. And SEAN PAUL, whats up with singing to a recording of BEYONCE. So many performances were not LIVE that when METALLICA performed only JAMES's mike was turned on at first.

ASHANTI, just stop singing and...wait what else can she do?

And sorry I dont buy the whole I DANCE so i cant sing routine, because MYA sings LIVE and so does PRINCE and they sure dance. But IM tired of hearing complaints about BRITNEY not singing LIVE because its usually done by people who praise JANET AND MADONNA and 90 % of the time these 2 never played live and neither did MJ, in fact I saw JANET in concert and 90% of the show was not LIVE.

So hopefully this will be the END of this show, IM SURE the ratings are going to be awful, especially for a SUNDAY in NOVEMBER. Its time to END it MR CLARK. Leave it to the GRAMMIES they have their flaws to, but at least I can enjoy the performances most of the time.

I knew this was going to be a bad show when I noticed Beyonce was not performing and that Jennifer Lopez was nominated for an award.

I can't believe Beyonce didn't win anything, she's ruled the music scene all year. Who picks these winners?

Beyonce lost to Aaliyah (dead for two years) in one category. Not to be callous, but I guess Beyonce had to be dead to win ... or sick ... Luther did win two awards for an album that has barely been getting any notice. These were pity awards.

Now, I like Aaliyah and Luther, but they would not have been my choice for any awards this year. But you know, there weren't many to choose from since the nominations sucked. Who is nominating Clay for stuff? Please!

Do these people even understand the pulse of music right now?

Jennifer Lopez actually won her category and that's why I think people were booing -- not because she wasn't there but because her non-singing ass actually won on the thrust of that sorry "baby, I love you" song. So disappointing.

The ONLY highlight was Andre singing Hey Ya! He's always cool.

You're right, nobody was there ... which is why they kept pimping out Justin Timberlake via satellite. They showed him 3 times. Damn. An AMA is a joke award. It hardly celebrates real music.

Yes I remember when these shows used to be a major event. Now I know I'm not all plugged into all the radio promoted payola trosh that's getting played, but I still didn't feel the same kind of anticipation and excitment among even younger people that we felt the years that MJ ruled the awards, or the year that Prince did.

Back then those shows were attended and watched by EVERYONE. You didn't miss it! Now people are like "Sheeeit I got a show to perform... can't make it."

the Grammies moved their date up, and so the AMA's have moved theirs up. now that the AMA's take place before Grammy nominations are announced, no one wants to take the chance of performing at the AMA's just in case they get nominated for a Grammy and invited to perform.

Both Dre and Big Boi performed... Hey Ya and I Like the Way You Move.

While Dre had an impressive stage set and costume etc. his performance was trumped by Big Boi who had an actual band playing.

It's ironic cuz Dre's record suggests a different musical direction but all of his live appearances have been lacking by relying on the hip hop formula of prerecorded tracks, a DJ, and back up dancers.

do you think maybe it's just because of the song he's doing? i've only seen him perform Hey Ya (about 50 times, admittedly), but i'd think that would be a hard song to present with a live band, especially considering the travel costs for the number of people it would take to pull it off, to travel around on a TV promotional tour.

it'll be interesting when a second single is on the way if Andre switches over to a live band if it's a song that would come off easier with one.

yes... Mrs. Dee and i were talking about that last night... andre is the one that's always talking about his guitar and sax lessons, and getting back to the jazzy elements of music and using musicians and whatnot... and the album, he follows through with this... but live, all he has is a dj and a few background singers... nobody playing an instrument...

big boi on the other hand... got a horn section, guitar players, singers... everything... i think he tore dre's ass up last night... big boi had the better performance...

my point exactly. he's become the kind of musician only a mother could love biggrin

but hey, he's got that built-in fanbase of middle-aged women who faithfully turn up to scream and throw their panties at him every time he drags his carcass out to tour.

gotta respect that i guess.

the first collection of "american songbook" songs was nice... it was rod doing a style that he'd never done before... and he did it fairly well... it was like when willie nelson released "stardust," except not as groundbreaking...

the difference is that willie nelson did it once, and moved on... the problem with rod is that because the last one brought him the first taste of commercial and critical success that he's had since the "unplugged" thing, he decided that he would go back and milk that cow again... which is just fuckin' tacky as hell... and as such, the new one doesn't have that freshness that the last album had... and it's done sloppily... and it basically sucks...

Y'all were paying attention to Big Boi's band??!!! Forget all that (though it was sweet hearing a band play it), but damn that dancer was hot!!! She filled out that dress like I ain't never seen!! Damn baby! love

I think another reason about BB having a band and everything could be that he plans on touring and is getting things ready, sort of a rehearsal. Whereas, Dre has repeatedly said he wouldn't do a tour for this album, so when he's performing on TV for promotion, he may just be hiring what he needs to get the performance "over". I just know that whatever the next single is, whether it be Prototype or She Lives In My Lap, he's gonna needs a band backing him up!! I'm sorry!

It was so painful to watch...

To those in my age group and older (28+)...remember how great the AMA's were in the past??? I looked forward to the AMA's more than the Grammies at the time. EVERYONE performed on the AMA's...some of my favorite moments were...

-PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION in 1985 performing 'Purple Rain' LIVE and winning a bunch of awards...
-PRINCE presenting in 1986 (Huey Lewis won)
-PRINCE accepting the Acheivement Award in 1990
-PRINCE accepting the Award of Merit and performing songs from 'Gold Experience' 1995
-SHEILA E performing that same year
-APOLLONIA dressing like 'Cleopatra' one year and dressed in skirt made out of newspaper the next
-MJ taking home evey award given sans the token one given to Alabama (LOL) in 1984
-BARBRA STRIESAND & NEIL DIAMOND doing 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers' for the only time ever on television
-JANET and WHITNEY sweeping the awards in '87-'88 and MADONNA suprising award acceptance when no one thought she was there
-DIANA ROSS and the 'OUTRAGEOUS!'LIONEL RICHIE hosting!
-WHITNEY her mama and brother singing 'Prince of Peace' and the whole audience on their feet (1988)
-The return of GLORIA ESTEFAN (after her accident) 1990
-MADONNA and BABYFACE perform 'Take A Bow' 1995

and one of the most amazing peformances ever...

WHITNEY in 1994 TEARING through a medley of "I Love's You Porgy/And I Am Telling You, I Am Not Going/I Have Nothing"

Whitney won a ton of awards that year and capped off the night recieving the Award of Acheivment from Stevie Wonder!

I think '95 was the last good year for the AMA's...It's been crap since!

Had throw my two cents in:

The only highlight for me was Pink. Girl CAN sing, and DID sing. No lip syncing there. I am so glad she did not do a themed music performance like her video. She was at least one performer who brought it.

Clay and Ruben, together on Jesus is Love was great.

You can keep the rest

rolleyes oh come on, it wasn't that bad, infact, I think it's been the best one of the past five years. Of course it's not up there with te other ones mentioned in one of the posts, but if you put aside the thoughts of "how it used to be" it was actually an okay show.
Stop being drama queens.
And if I hear one more person bash clay or Rueben I'm gonna scream. You would like them if they weren't associated with "American Idol" Sure that show does basicly make popstars, but at least these two can actually sing, I just don't get peoples' problems with them.

Ashanti...she needs to lip synch. She has an enjoyable voice in the studio, but live it just isn't working. That song is actually a very nice one. No up there with Chaka, Dianna, or even Mariah, but I'm done comparing today's music to yesterday's.

Britney...first that girl needed to look at a mirrior, horrible outfit, hardly did any dancing, and was off on the lip synching. Very poor performance from her...she's actually capable of putting on a good show.

Pink...that performance actually made me like her, that hasn't happened in along time.

Jimmy Kimmel...yeah, that's a joke, A very bad one at that. Could've gotten someone better.

The only people that didn't show up were 50 Cent, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez(thank god). Don't over-dramatize.

IF people actually just realized that things aren't the way they were back in say, '85 and stopped comparing everything to say, Prince, they'd actually be able to enjoy some things. Most of today's music isn't up there with yesterday's, but that doesn't make it bad. some is, don't get me wrong, but I think some just complain because they want to.

This year's show wasn't that bad.

Oh wow,I remember ALL of those shows!! Back then, the American Music Awards was a major EVENT,and people would be talking about it for weeks on end.I still remember going to school the day after MJ won every single award imaginable in 1984,and EVERYBODY was talking about it.I also recall everyone talking about Prince's cool 1985 appearance, where he performed "Purple Rain" (interestingly,Cyndi Lauper performed her version of "When You Were Mine" on the same show!).That show featured THREE of his flames...Vanity,Apollonia and Sheila,I wonder if there was a catfight backstage? LOL.At one point,Vanity even presented an award to Prince.

Nowadays, this show is a big yawn.
