I'm So Tired of Hip-Hop and the Like...

The crap that is exposed as music these days... sigh

Everything on the radio sucks.

Everything at awards shows suck...

There's no great artists on today's music scene...we wait for new releases from our life-long legends while the record labels spew out crap - crap - crap!!! mad

Who's gonna be around awhile? Who's the "flavor of the week"? I want musical sustenance, goddammit!!!

yeah, i do. i don't listen to radio anymore. FM radio, anyway. it was spring of 1996 and i had finally had enough of that Bodeans song from the show Party Of Five being played on every station every hour, and i flipped over to talk radio. haven't been back to the FM band for more than 5 minutes since.

Yeah true.

But - you can only stand so much of your own cd's in the car. Talk radio is great, but the majority of the talk radio hosts in my neck of the woods are mega-ultra-conservative types... and I can only stand so much of that too... sigh So I listen to the radio.

I usually end up at a station that plays mid to late seventies stuff. Occasionally I listen to the top 40... and usually, I'm disappointed. confused

i've been lucky enough to find a good mix of talk radio, the far left, the far right, right down the middle, and the completely nonsensical. but yeah, it's hard to find.

and i agree, you can only listend to CD's so much. my own CDR versions of my CD's are the only things that i can listen to anymore, and even that gets old until i make something new.

I like rap... depending on the artist, or the style... but, not every fucking song on the radio requires a rap attack in the middle of it.

Sometimes a song is just a song. You don't need a rap in everything... disbelief

I used to listen to Tom Lykis (sp?) and John & Ken... and would really get into their stuff (back when I was commuting from Orange County to San Diego on a daily basis). Now, I'm in Rush Limbaugh country... barf

I agree, but I find myself liking certain SONGS, not
artists...I won't buy their CD's, cause I know that
90% of it will be trash. I did buy Outkast, because
of the hype, and after hearing "Hey Ya!" on the radio.

Funny, sometimes I'll catch my kids getting into some
Prince song that I'll play in the car...I know that my
6 yr old daughter said she liked "I love U, but I don't
trust you anymore", but she denies it to this day!
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

well,
my question to you is, how BIG is yer music collection? make yerself some mixed CD's (get music from friends, whatever) burn 'em for yerself...i never listen to radio, always been tired of hip-hop, this generation of music is going to "run out" of things to sample after awhile, TRUE!
...suggestion: you need to network, sounds like bootlegs er yer answer, whatcha think? i only do that when im in dire straights (like recently, i just got "the news", nice!)

Oh, I've got a huuuge collection of music, all styles, all decades... From Hip-Hop to Classical to R&B to Country, to Broadway to Rap to Alt to Grunge to Rock to Disco to Soul to Techno to Spanish etc... etc...

Well over 350 store bought discs, not to mention the mp3s and dubs. boxed

But the topic is what's being pumped out and continuously played on the radio today... confused

June7, I TOTALLY feel ya'. People often talk about how terrible disco and music of the 80's was, but it was 10 times better than what we've seen over the last 10 years.
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

This is why I primarily listen only to the great music that I grew up with.I'm stuck in the 70s as far as music is concerned (as if y'all didn't already know that...lol).I just can't tolerate the crap that passes for music these days.Give me old Earth Wind and Fire,Fleetwood Mac,Roberta Flack,Heatwave, etc, and I'm satisfied. That music has SUBSTANCE.

Totally disagree:

turn off your radio, forget about awards, buy cd's and enjoy the great music around today (which is, sorry 10 times better than the crappy disco and 80s music).

99% of hip hop is BS, just like 99% of pop music in general is BS, but, say, Outkast, Dre, Missy Elliott, the Neptunes...are truly great artists.

PS: And I'm no hip hop fan, as what I listen to is also mainly early 70s music (+jazz)

True.I have more fun learning about what I missed in prior decades than any current or future acts.Over the past 5 years or so,Ive been on a Funk journey, collecting just about all the 70s funk I could get my hands on .This sort of led to an interest in Jazz via Hancock which led to Miles and other Jazz greats( Im still working in this catagory. There's alot of ground to cover!)Somehow ,lately , I got sidetracked with a sudden desire to explore the 60s psychedelic/acid/hippie/flowerpower thing so who knows where I'll end up next. The point is,if youre not happy where it's at,dig up some roots. There's nearly a century of recorded music to explore.

Exactly. After growing up with all that great 70s music (Stevie Wonder,EW&F,Rick James, etc),I simply refuse to "settle" for the crap music of today (R.Kelly,Ashanti, the rappers, etc). These days,I get most excited about old, classic albums that get remastered.THAT'S where my money, time and energy is going.

One plus - there's this new station called "the groove" and it plays all the classic stuff from late 70's and 80's! Where else can you tune in and hear Teena Marie's "Square Biz" and G.Q's "I Do Love You", next to Santana's "Black Magic Woman" and War's "Why Can't We Be Friends?"

"when the music's over...turn out the lights". Who sang that...Jim Morrison?

Hey, stop tuning into conventional radio. Let it die. Can't you hear the death rattle? Understand, until vehicle manufacturers start including internet (they're starting) you're faced with the conventional or your own CD's while in your car...but c'mon folks, there's a plethora of great music to listen to on-line. www.wefunkradio.com or www.deepfunk.org etc. etc. etc. oh...and no commercials. Invest in a good pair of computer speakers and you'll never look back.

I guarantee too that the star system as we know it today won't exist in 5 years. The Britney's of the world won't have access to us the way they do now. This is their last hurrah and it's up to you to help bury them. Stop listening to your dayum radio.
