also, it's amazing the amount of success missy elliout has already had in comparision to what seems to be on the horizon for her. justin timberlake is talented and driven enough to last many years in the industry as in christina aguilara. I assume you are American, and not talking about worldwide success? .

SciFi, it looks like this thread has been written/commented on, from a blinkered US point of view.
Zeppelin, Abba, INXS, Bowie, Elton John, Oasis, Robbie Williams, Duran Duran, U2, don't Feature! To me its: 40s: Sinatra 50s: Elvis 60s: Beatles 70s: Bowie 80s: Jackson (with Springsteen, Madonna, Duran Duran and Prince) 90s: U2 Nivarna had 1 worldwide number 1 single, and 2 number one albums. U2 had 5 number one singles, and 4 number one albums. . [This message was edited Wed Nov 12 17:51:49 PST 2003 by SquirrelMeat] .

The almost rans: 50s: Billy Halley 60s: Rolling Stones 70s: Elton John 80s: Madonna 90s: Hmmm. Pearl Jam? Oasis? Spice Girls, Nivarna? Actually, after U2, probably the most sucessful worldwide artist was Madonna. Not bad, 2 decades at the top. . [This message was edited Wed Nov 12 18:23:17 PST 2003 by SquirrelMeat] .

wizardofmath said: We are living in an age where lasting performers are almost a thing of the past. Record labels are always looking for the next big thing rather than concern for nurturing current artists. Mariah Carey is a perfect example. At the first sign of trouble she was disregarded by her label. Perhaps she is not the best example to use on this board due to the habit of extremes that is consistently shown (to be read: lack of objectivity by many) but it seems obvious to me. Many acts in the recent few years have flopped after their sophomore effort. A huge reason for that is failure to sell an immediate 10 million units. If an artist/group doesn't move units quickly enough, the label moves on to greener pastures. I don't foresee any mega-stars (in the vein of Madonna, U2, Prince, Nirvana) in the next decade. Missy Elliott will probably have a lasting impression and may be the only one who really makes a dent. Even she, however, pales in comparison to past superstars such as Janet or Michael Jackson.
My employer (who is in the industry) made a comment in the recent past. It was said in partial jest and mockery but I never forgot what she said. "Superstars are sooo 80s" Agreed. The days of superstar dominance are over.Back in the day,an album like 'Rumours' (Fleetwood Mac),'Saturday Night Fever'(Bee Gees),'Thriller'(Michael Jackson),and 'Purple Rain' (Prince) would come out and totally RULE the pop music world, staying at Number One for *MONTHS* on end.Nowadays, music has become like fast food.People hear something they like, buy it,digest it and then quickly move on to the next thing. With few exceptions, most new albums stay in the Top 10 for only a few weeks. These days, record companies don't take the time to NURTURE an artist and allow them to grow.If their first record flops, they could be kicked off the label just like that.I would hate to be a new recording artist in today's harsh climate.

I've got to agree that Eminem and Britney Spears are way in the lead, however much I don't get them. Actually, I understand Britney's appeal, because it is all about soft-core porn and tits and ass with her...I understand why that sells records.
Eminem is more of an "artist" at least, even though I don't understand the wild appeal of his stuff. I suppose J Lo is in there somewhere, but she's an actress as well and not as much of a pure musical superstar as the others. . [This message was edited Thu Nov 13 4:26:55 PST 2003 by TonyC]

...oh, and someone up there mentioned the Dixie Chicks jokingly, don't count them out. All three of their discs have gone diamond, and they're country artists!
