I don't think we've seen the best of what this decade has to offer.

They say the really good music comes around every 10 years...I don't think we've waited long enough yet. We're still mostly going through another period of shit music. I think the last lot of good music was around 91-95. Although some of the artists I put up there have produced some great stuff (OutKast, Beck).

70's belong equally to Bowie, Stevie and Elton, as far as ruling the entire decade. there were others, but they petered out halfway through or didn't come around until halfway through.

I think it is going to be a lot like the ninties which never really belonged to anyone. I mean, Nirvania was done releasing material after 1994 (for some reason I count the Unplugged album as more offical than "Muddy Banks" live album). I think there was a great alternative movement during and after Nirvania. MTV played The Pixies "Here Comes Your Man" video on "Alternative Nation", the greatest video show ever!, like it was new. But it kind of died down with the pop wave of 97 and the Spice Girls, then Hanson and the boy bands (did you know Justin Timberlake was in a group?) and the teen girls (did you know that Christina and Britney weren't always super sluts)? So did the ninties really belong to anyone. I saw no.

As for Janet, there are too many gaps between her albums(89...93...97...01...?) and "The Velvet Rope" didn't set the mainstream on fire (although the people that own it love it).

We are living in an age where lasting performers are almost a thing of the past. Record labels are always looking for the next big thing rather than concern for nurturing current artists. Mariah Carey is a perfect example. At the first sign of trouble she was disregarded by her label. Perhaps she is not the best example to use on this board due to the habit of extremes that is consistently shown (to be read: lack of objectivity by many) but it seems obvious to me. Many acts in the recent few years have flopped after their sophomore effort. A huge reason for that is failure to sell an immediate 10 million units. If an artist/group doesn't move units quickly enough, the label moves on to greener pastures. I don't foresee any mega-stars (in the vein of Madonna, U2, Prince, Nirvana) in the next decade. Missy Elliott will probably have a lasting impression and may be the only one who really makes a dent. Even she, however, pales in comparison to past superstars such as Janet or Michael Jackson.

My employer (who is in the industry) made a comment in the recent past. It was said in partial jest and mockery but I never forgot what she said.

"Superstars are sooo 80s"

I predict hip hop artists will rule...in 3 years...the biggest impact has been seen in the hip hop industry...

justin could be big over the decade, depends on the "difficult" second album.

To be honest, the way the music industry is going, I don't think there will be any more "greats". Its become consumer turnover. Nothing will ever sell like thriller did.

beyonce both solo and with destiny child has ruled the past 3 summers and she is due to have 3 more albums out next year alone.

also, it's amazing the amount of success missy elliout has already had in comparision to what seems to be on the horizon for her.

justin timberlake is talented and driven enough to last many years in the industry as in christina aguilara.
