Is Spears more Like Janet or Madonna? Why does Brittany Spears play off the influence
Janet has over her sound and style? she's nothing Like Madonna in my eyes and borrows more from Janet. To me she wants to be Janet, but for career reasons is riding Madonna’s coattail instead. We all want a big hit again because
we want to relive the Hysteria & Pandemonium we experienced when Purple Rain was Hot. Actually, he doesn't care if it happens again or not.

janet.
The only reason why she's labled "the next madonna" (as if there ever will be another one) is because she's white. She's aknowledged Janet as an influence many times. Her music, vocals, dance moves, ect. favor janet's moreso than madonna's. Of course Spears herself has her on thing going. ~KiKi

I'd say she's more reverent to Madonna, musically and otherwise, judging more by what she does than says. I predict that she'll continue to bloom into more of a Madonna-clone over the coming years, and the same could be said for Aguilera. The only thing that sets these nu-divas apart from Maddy, is that Madonna was pretty much always explicitly sexual, as her breakthrough single proved, whereas Spears and Aguilera started off playing the "innocent" card.
Janet was always more soulful and less poppy than Britney. She flirted with pop and rock, but was deeply rooted in urban music, and it wasn't so much about the image.

hmmm, I'm inclined to say Madonna, for the ambition and the mega-momentum of her cult of personality.
but ... a lot like Janet, in the sense that she doesn't have much of an original thought in her head, and seems to be guided by handlers. yes, she has ambition, but it's blind ambition... it's others who give her the ideas. in that way, she's like Janet.

Janet didn't write anything until Rhythm Nation, and at best, was 3rd down on the list of songwriters for each song. Britney co-wrote about 4 songs on her last album, and i think 8 on this one.

pretty cocky for a guy with Barbra Streisand listed as one of his favorite artists

pretty cocky for a guy with Barbra Streisand listed as one of his favorite artists Yeah... cocky enough to admit to liking Barbra! June7 don't play! Now, here's the credits as listed: Control written by James Harris, III, Terry Lewis and Janet Jackson Nasty written by James Harris, III, Terry Lewis and Janet Jackson What Have You Done For Me Lately? written by James Harris, III, Terry Lewis and Janet Jackson You Can Be Mine written by James Harris, III, Terry Lewis and Janet Jackson When I Think Of You written by James Harris, III, Terry Lewis and Janet Jackson Let's Wait Awhile written by James Harris, III, Terry Lewis, Janet Jackson and Melanie Andrews Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun) written by James Harris, III, Terry Lewis and Janet Jackson That's seven out of nine! Plus, I've never heard that the songs were intended for another artist, ever. In fact, just the opposite. Janet was courted by Jam&Lewis to record with them in Minneapolis. The songs came out of a collaboration after they all decided where this album was coming from, what direction they wanted it to go in... it became a declaration of her independaence from her father, Joe. |

Remember the MTV Icon show for Janet Jackson? Britney made it quite clear that the vision of Janet in her Rhythm Nation tour made her "want to be her".
And when I see a clips from the 80s of Janet dancing hard with her fucken boom mic coming out of her neck, I could swear it was a Britney-ism. I fucking love Control, Rhythm Nation, janet., and I'm basically the same age as Britney so I can totally see how those albums could have been very important in her development. I think the lyrical content is a little more blatantly racy than controversially raising issues, which you could debate between Janet's contribution and Madonna's. Janet didn't really do a song like Papa Don't Preach, yknow? And if you want to compare Britney to anything of Madonna's, you can't compare her 4th album to anything past Madonna's second album Like A Virgin. But Britney is a blond, so is seen as having the essence of Blond Ambition. It's freakin' Janet. But either way: Britney is totally `80s.

Celine Dion gets writing credits, to get her more money, because it is known that a song no one would have ever heard of or bought will sell millions of copies, only because it's on her album. and she's never written a word/note of her music.

I seriously think that Janet wrote at least some of the lyrics of "Control" (in other words, at least some lyrics for ever song she is credited with) and I highly doubt that Celine has a writing credit to her name. I'm not a big fan of hers but I'm pretty sure that she never wrote anything and if she did, it was a few lines that somehow made it into a song. I don't think that writers are willing to a give a some diva credit and their own money for no reason. But I could be wrong. I mean, if Jimmy and Terry really wrote those songs themseleves, why spilt it three ways? Yes, if it on a Celine album it will be a hit but they aren't going to give up royalities to a diva are they? Britney Spears is just like every other pop star who came before her and every other pop star who will come after her. Choreographed dance has existed long before Michael, Madonna or Janet. Has anyone ever heard of Broadway?

I'm not a big fan of hers but I'm pretty sure that she never wrote anything and if she did, it was a few lines that somehow made it into a song. that's basically what i said. she hasn't written a word/note of her music, but her management demands that songs given to her get a writing credit, because the song probably wouldn't sell as much if it wasn't on her album. as for Janet, the same thing may be true of her Control (and some of the Rhythm Nation stuff), but as for who actually wrote it Jam and Lewis have given accounts of both of the things i've said: that the songs were meant for another singer, and that the stuff they did get from Janet, was just from talking to her and getting a feel for what she was going through, so they tailored the lyrics to her. I don't think that writers are willing to a give a some diva credit and their own money for no reason. But I could be wrong. I mean, if Jimmy and Terry really wrote those songs themseleves, why spilt it three ways? Yes, if it on a Celine album it will be a hit but they aren't going to give up royalities to a diva are they?
yes, because even giving Celine a writing credit, having it on her album (at least from the mid through late 90's) meant that they'd be making a HUGE fortune on the songs, even giving her a cut of it. now, this isn't the case with ALL of Celine's songwriters. for example, i believe the ones written by David Foster or Dianne Warren don't have a Celine writing credit, because their songs are always immensely popular anyway. however, for the lesser-known songwriters on her album, Celine's management demands that she be given a writing credit for the privelege of getting the song on her album. to keep it honest, though, she's only listed as a writer with the publishing companies and with those who actually collect the royalties, and does not take it to the step of putting it in the album sleeve.

Back in the day, it was reported that some of the tunes from Control were given to I believe Sharon Bryant (formely of Atlantic Starr) who was a solo recording artist for A&M records. Jam and Lewis offered Sharon some tunes and she turned them down. Janet was next on Jam & Lewis's list. I read this in Right On or Black Beat.

I think she's much more like Madonna, except that she lipsynchs like Janet.
Madonna is a brilliant media whore. She just cant stand to be out of the spotlight and will stoop to great depths and reach great heights to get media attention... hello, SEX BOOK. Britney's camp has her spread so thin across the media landscape it's just depressing that the record can't back up the promise. I DO dig Britney, she's gorgeous and pretty and smiles and has a great set of shoes, but as far as musical abilities, I'm afraid she's just not that good... beyond her Vanity-like moans, she's got nuttin.
