Finally, details about The Cure's "Join The Dots" are revealed! Full tracklisting included :D

Taken directly from www.thecure.com

AT LAST THE BOXSET!

FIRST THE PUFF...
THE CURE: JOIN THE DOTS: B-SIDES AND RARITIES,
1978-2001 (THE FICTION YEARS)
Offers Fans First-Ever Collection of Hard-To-Find Gems
Career-Spanning Four-Disc Set In Stores January 13, 2004
As The Cure nears its third decade at the forefront of pop culture, Universal, Rhino and Fiction/Elektra
are celebrating the band's remarkable career with
THE CURE: JOIN THE DOTS: B-SIDES AND RARITIES, 1978-2001 (THE FICTION YEARS),
a spectacular four-disc treasury of hard-to-find gems, never-before-seen photos,
track by track breakdowns and extensive liner notes.
"The first thing I ever did when I got a new single," remembers Cure vocalist Robert Smith,
"was flip it over and play the other side. I always hoped the B-side would give me another
version of the artist, something as good as the A-side but somehow different. I expected great B-sides from the artists I loved... "
Come 1978, when The Cure released their debut single, 'Killing An Arab,' Smith
expected no less from himself than he had from his heroes. It's evident from the
very first cut in this box set, '10:15 Saturday Night,' that he intended Cure B-sides
to be every bit as captivating as their better-known A-sides.
Among the 70 original and digitally re-mastered recordings included on
JOIN THE DOTS are 'Another Journey By Train' (b-side of 'A Forest'),
'Sugar Girl' (b-side of 'Just Like Heaven'), 'Halo' (b-side of 'Friday I'm In Love'),
a cover of David Bowie's 'Young Americans' and many, many more.
THE CURE: JOIN THE DOTS: B-SIDES AND RARITIES, 1978-2001 (THE FICTION YEARS)
will be available January 13, 2004 at all retail outlets and at www.rhino.com for a
suggested retail price of $54.98. Robert Smith has Produced this first-ever collection
of specialty songs, which includes a 76-page book filled with rare photos from Smith's
own archives, a track-by-track breakdown from Smith and bassist Simon Gallup
and original commentary written by noted U.K. scribe Johnny Black.
Alternative before alternative was the norm, The Cure formed in 1976 when Smith,
a 17-year-old attending school in Sussex, formed The Easy Cure with schoolmates
Michael Dempsey (bass), Lol Tolhurst (drums) and local guitar hero Porl Thompson.
The quartet began writing their own songs almost immediately, and quickly compiled
an impressive repertoire of original material that included the seminal classics
'Boys Don't Cry' and '10:15 Saturday Night.' Over the course of the 27 years that followed,
they weathered lineup changes and forged an extraordinary career highlighted by an astonishing
run of artistic and commercial achievement, including chart-topping hit singles, gold
and platinum records, countless awards, critical acclaim and an international fan base
that follows the band with near religious fervor. They have secured their place in music
history by shaping modern rock as we know it today.
In January of 2002, The Cure signed worldwide to Ross Robinson's iam Records,
heralding the start of another chapter in the history of one of the few bands in
the world able to continually combine innovation, integrity and intelligence with mass global success.

I'm glad to see that most of the demos and alternate versions have been left off in favor of non-album tracks.

The stuff contained on here looks like mostly released material. I'm sure more unreleased gems will make their way onto the album remasters. wink

One thing I don't get though is how they came up with 500+ minutes worth of material on this set. It'll more likely be about 300 I'm guessing.

what is Possession?

IAN WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?????

ok. this is so close to the list that i made in the other cure thread, that i have no issue with it at all. fuck yeah! SO LET ME PREFACE ALL OF THIS by saying it's all good, and everything that follows is just me rambling cuz i've been waiting so long for a box like this. i wanna say a few things tho...

"spilt milk" fucking better be on the bloodflowers reissue.

i Am glad that carnage visors wasn't included. yes, it's an important part of the cure's past, but it's almost a half an hour long! (that part doesn't bother me, i still rock the 21 minute version of "america") ... but what would they have had to take off the box to make room for it? i'm sure it'll be on the faith reissue.

POSSESSION. I'm 99% positive this is a bloodflowers outake. Check the chain of flowers site.

Which brings me to...

Yes, the exclusion of songs like spilt milk point to bonus tracks on bloodflowers. then what's possession doing here?

Might the plastic passion included here be the original demo?

Are pillbox tales and do the hansa the original 1977 demos, or the 1986 versions? i really, really love the 1986 version of pillbox tales. but they're placed at the beginning of the collection, so hmmm

I don't really think it's cool that there's multiple versions of the same songs here.

Three versions of Hello I Love you? (fine, one of them is the 10 second "slight return" ... but still)

Two versions of la ment: i could do without the japanese whispers version (although it's terrific that they're including the flexipop version)

Two versions of purple haze: you can get the common version on Stone Free. Again, tho a big HOORAY for including the "virgin radio version" ... this is the original version of the song before it was remixed by chuck for the album. but they could have just included that one alone.

Two versions of signal to noise. a wonderful track, one of my most favorites in years. but the fact that there's two versions of it here, when there's other things they could have included instead is kind of shitty. After the first play through of this box, who's not going to hit the skip button and want to listen to back to back duplicates?

further thoughts:

are "just one kiss" and "a japanese dream" the full length 12 inch versions?

Why so many remixes of album tracks on disc four? fuck that remix of just say yes; the original version better be on the bloodflowers reissue. this is a lie? wrong number? i can see the inclusion of wrong number, cuz i don't buy compilations. but really, this is a fucking lie (palmer mix)??

i do, applaud the inclusion of the oakenfold mix of out of this world; as far as i know, that was only released online, and it's a wonderful mix.

since wrong number is on here, the 7" version of never enough should have been too. i really am happy that "hey you" is on here (since it's not on the kiss me cd) ... and it's the extended mix too!

wow, that's a lot of japanese whispers/the walk material. but that's probably my american perspective. i don't consider those tracks rare (tracks 9 through 13, disc one)

"to the sky" !! hell yeah

the remix of just like heaven is cool, but things like that and the 7" mix of "how beautiful you are" don't give me a lot of hope for that 12 inch collection i've been hoping for.

people will be rejoicing over disc one, as it's an expanded version of side two of the standing on a beach cassette.

a remix of doing the unstuck? i hope it's as good as the rest of the wish era remixes. ... but then i seem to love the remixes that most other fans hate. ["a letter to elise (blue mix)" ... "close to me (closer mix)" ... are two examples of mixes i love but most other people loathe.)

no cuT HEre? but two versions of signal to noise... hrmmm

BUT WHATEVER! this collection is still awesome as fuck and i can't wait. this is in no way a nay sayer post. i was grinning ear to ear when i read the tracklist.

so what's up on the listening party tron? i live a mile north of detroit, on the west side.

p.s. no way is this 500+ minutes, true. 4 cds at 80 minutes each max = 320 minutes. .... but shit, that's still almost six hours of music.

you'd think so. but i'm hoping for some bonus tracks with vocals... a couple of those lost wishes are pretty good tho.

what i'm wondering is how much those bonus discs on the reissues are gonna overlap with the box set contents.

high sessions include:

open (fix mix)
high (trip mix)
high (higher mix)
this twilight garden
play
wendy time (different lyrics)
doing the unstuck (12 inch)
friday i'm in love (strangelove mix)
halo
scared as you
a letter to elise (different lyrics)
a letter to elise (blue mix)
a letter to elise (extended mix)
the big hand
a foolish arrangement
cut (different lyrics)
old england
heart attack
uyea sound (lost wish)
off to sleep (lost wish)
the three sisters (lost wish)
cloudberry (lost wish)

looks like a good disc, even if six of those songs are on the box set, eh?

To the Sky is an interesting inclusion... it's never been officially released... but I guess it's included here as opposed to the KMKMKM reissue because it's so well-known and so widely bootlegged? I'm glad, for whatever reason. I have the feeling that the re-issues are going to include alot of demos.
