I love this CD too.I have all of her albums, and a few other compilations, but what makes this "Best Of" so special are the three new songs "That's The Way" (originally intended for No Doubt),"Dream-A-Lots Theme (I Will Live For Love)" and the underground summer 2003 club hit "You're So Beautiful".
On a Donna Summer forum,we were discussing producers that Donna should work with on her next album.I suggested Moby (who praised her on his website recently),William Orbit and Giorgio Moroder.Donna could make a killer electronic/dance album with these guys, and make a huge comeback.

If the dated "I Will Live For Love" proves anything it is no more Girogio. I'm sorry but its over. And if the amazing "You're So Beautiful" proves anything its that you can still sing and seriously blow everyone away with an amazing record. I think she should work with modern dance/pop producers.

With whick album do I start? Of course one of them re-issues with extra goodies, right? If you have nothing, start with the new hits album "The Journey". It's a nice mix of new and old (make sure you get the bonus CD with "You're So Beautiful"). As for a full album, I guess do "Bad Girls" or if you can afford it "Bad Girls Deluxe" (which is her only reissue with extras to date and includes a lot of extended verisons of the disco hits). It has a lot of hits and is pretty diverse for disco with lots of ballads, electonica, pop, country (a liitle), rock, funk, etc. Very good. Her best in my opinion is "Once Upon A Time" but it has no real hits (both "I Love You" and "Rumour Has It" were minor hits) but it is a bit much at first. If you like eighties dance pop "Another Place and Time" is a very good one with production by the same guys that did the early Kylie and Rick Astley songs (Stock-Atiken-Waterman).

With which album do I start? Of course one of them re-issues with extra goodies, right? Start with her masterpiece "Bad Girls",which has been remastered recently (it's now a Deluxe 2-CD set). Then pick these essential albums... "Once Upon A Time" (1977) "Live And More" (1978) "The Donna Summer Anthology" (1993)

[This message was edited Fri Nov 7 6:14:08 PST 2003 by DavidEye] "I Will Live For Love" is just a bit dated if you ask me (as was "Carry On", just doesn't age well). I listened to "That's The Way" the other day and yeah it is charming pop song and could be a good single but I think "Beautiful" should be pushed before anything. Release it!

Back to recomending CDs, get "I'm A Rainbow" if you can. It might be out of print though, which sucks since it will be hell to release it again. It has quite a history and wasn't originally released when it was meant to be in 1981. It was supposed to be her second album (and a double album) for Geffen and a return to dance music after the new wavish "The Wanderer", with Girigio and Pete producing (it ended up being the last time the trio worked together). Again, no hits but a pretty amazing cover of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" along with the dancy poppy "Melanie" and rocking "Leave Me Alone" to the R&B "Sweet Emotion", this one is amazing. A lot of different writers and styles. Sadly it was probably her best album of the eighties. Have to say it ranks above the typical SAW album "Another Place and Time", which is still very good.

I gotta disagree with you here 'I'm A Rainbow' has some good songs on it,but I can't understand why so many people think it's this big, important, introspective album that "evil" David Geffen rejected...lol...the truth is,it's a mediocre album at best and I don't think it would have done that well in 1981 (when it was supposed to come out).Songs like "Romeo" and "Brooklyn" are dreadful, and there are too many overblown pop ballads here ("I Need Time","You To Me").Her previous record 'The Wanderer' is a strong, focused collection of tunes, but this follow-up album is wildly uneven.Like I said, there are a handful of good tunes ("Runner With The Pack" is arguably the best New Wave song she's ever done...the soulful "Sweet Emotion" is delightful...and "Walk On (Keep On Walkin)" would have made a fine single),but I don't really have much love for this album as a whole. I think it is very dated but also verif you love eighites music, you'll be blown away. I think it was her best of the eighties. "The Wanderer" was very good but after that they all had very weak moments that didn't make them flow as albums. Rather, they all seemed to have a few great songs and some really bad ones.

The CD that was released in 1996 is really in it's "demo form" and Donna herself was furious that it was released that way.And that's one of my main problems with it...many of the songs are simply missing something. What happened was,in the fall of 1981 when Donna presented the record to Geffen, she and her producers had planned to go back and "fine-tune" the songs. But since the album was rejected,no further work was done on the songs. I think 'the Wanderer' and 'Donna Summer' are both better albums than 'I'm A Rainbow'.

Still I enjoyed it and more as whole than "Donna Summer" but for me that is her worst album (not terrible, just her worst). What do you think Donna's worst is (and if you, like Donna, don't count IAR as an album, you have to pick somehting else)?

Donna Summer's best albums (imo)...
"Bad Girls" (1979) "Once Upon A Time" (1977) "Four Seasons Of Love" (1976) "Live And More" (1978) Donna Summer's worst albums... "All Systems Go" (1987)---a few good songs, but alot of filler as well "Mistaken Identity" (1991)---this is her most "soulful" album since the Quincy Jones album, but unfortunately,it's also her least interesting album ever.

I don't know. I think both "All Systems Go" amd "Mistaken Identity" have moments that make them good but probably not as good as anything from the seventies. Best albums: "Once Upon A Time" "Bad Girls" "I'm A Rainbow" "Another Place and Time" Worst "Nice To See Yo" (I know its not a real album but there are so damn many of them it is hard to ignore) "Donna Summer" "She Works Hard For the Money" Some of her best songs ever (title track and "I Do Believe I Feel In Love") but it also contains hands down her worst song. "Woman" along with other crine worthy moments.
