Well, they havent seen Jamiroquai live, have they? In order to judge a band and rate them "Last great funk ban" you need to know what they are capable of doing on stage. And I can tell you that they sound like shit.

I like most of the material from their first album and some songs of the second. After that, they are selling out. Jay`s voice gets on my nerves after a while because he cant play with it. It always sounds the same.

Like I told you before, I have played a few gigs with them in 1993, and I have seen them after that in 1997. None of these shows I would call real funk. The music is too shallow, and his singing live sounds awful.

The last great FUNK band was Mint Condition. These guys are more of a "groove" band. They've got a few nice tunes under their belt, though. Still, when I need a FUNK fix, I DON'T reach for any of their CDs.

Jamiroquai is a great act, but not a great band. They stopped being a great band after they ran out of ideas about halfway through their 3rd album. Ever since, it's been a Stevie Wonder disco-funk homage.

But their first 3, especially the first 2, and really great, and unique in the pop music landscape.

I've got nothing against their music even after that, I find it generally pleasant and agreeable, I just don't think it's all that interesting or revelatory.

Mint Condidtion?? Get the f**k outta here!!!
But you know what, I respect your opinion. I may not agree with it but you're still entitled to that opinion. There are some folk that say that Nirvana was the last great rock band or Biggie was the last great rapper or Britney Spears has talent, or that punk ended with The Clash "selling out".
I feel that my opinion is that Jamiroquai is the last "great" funk band in that they can execute a groove and get the asses shaking like no one els you hear. Sure there may be other funk groups out there that might possibly do as good as JK, maybe greater. But I haven't heard about them. And by that I mean NEW funk groups. We'll always have the golden age stuff from the 60's, 70's & 80's. But now Hip-hop still reigns supreme and I guess you could say that's the "funk". Funk has always been a dance music and the dance music that's hot not is either Hip-hop or Electronica.
Anyways, that's my twocents. You don't have to agree with me on this thread, I'm not expecting you to. If you do agree then thanks for understanding.

I repeat...MINT CONDITION.Disco is NOT funk. Those who were around back in the day can attest to that. many of the tunes I hear from Jamiroquai are groove oriented and DON'T give the "head bob effect". Check "Fopp" by the Ohio Players as an example. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying these guys suck or anything, I'm just saying that there have been funkier bands. The problem is that funk bands don't usually get the recognition that "pop funk" bands do. I wish them well, but they are far from the funkiest I've heard. If ya want funk fusion for instance, check SoulLive. Those guys are funky as hell. Its a funk/jazz mixture though.

I totally agree with you, BK. Mint Condition was the first name that came to mind when I saw the title of this thread. Jamiroquai, while I dig their sound, is too disco for me.

If you have seen some real funk acts like James Brown, Maceo, Mandrill, Ohio Players, etc. you`d know that Jamiroquai would look like a little group of school boys. Guess why they have never been booked on one bill with the masters??

A live DVD doesnt mean shit, by the way. Prince`s live at the Alladin is a great example how you can overdub and edit it to your like.

Hey if you're gonna make a ridiculous claim like that I think it's only fair that you suffer the verbal wrath of those who don't agree. What did you think everyone was gonna start posting "You are so right, I love Jamiroqaui! Jay Kay's a fucking genius!" In the future if you want people to co-sign with you, maybe you should start the same thread on his website.

lol Why should you get the last word on it? Its not about that or setting someone straight. I dont dislike Jamiroquai, I have seen them live about 20 times and know very well what they are capable of. In the early 90s it was great to have them around, because they brought a new (or vintage) flavor to the charts. But you simply cannot call them "the last great funk band", because there are many around that would kick Jamiroquais ass.

Saying "Whatever" is just a sign that you dont know what else to say. Check out James Brown or Mandrill live or even Prince-girl Rad with her band, and you`ll know what real funk is about.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I actually prefer their recent CDs to the first two albums.Everyone always raves about the first two albums, but I would take 'Synchronized' and 'A Funk Odyssey' over those albums anyday.Yes,the early albums are great...very experimental, funky and jam-oriented.But I think that, beginning with 'Traveling Without Moving',the guys really learned how to compose real *songs*,with hooks and melodies. It may not be entirely original or groundbreaking (nothing in pop music really is),but their new music kicks ass."Love Foolosophy" is the type of fun dance track that artists like Prince,Michael Jackson and George Michael could use.In fact,'A Funk Odyssey' is the best CD I bought this decade (so far).

there is that part of me that likes the latter half of their career, in that the songs are fun and funky. there's just no substance to them. they stopped being relevant mid-way through Travelling Without Moving. and that's fine, but it is what it is.

Yeah, whenever artists start making "radio-friendly" songs and expanding their audience, people always say that they "sold-out"...lol...I guess it's a no-win situation. In any case,it'll be interesting to see what the new CD sounds like. It's supposed to be a return to their roots, which should please those fans who continually insist that 'Emergency On Planet Earth' and 'Return Of The Space Cowboy' are their best albums.

Jamiroquai could never hear the funk in their own music either. In England, they were NEVER considered a Funk band. When they started to hit, Acid Jazz was really big and although Acid Jazz is no actual definition of a musical style, they were labeled just that and called themselves just that. Dont forget that their first single "When you gonna learn" came out on Acid Jazz Records, not on Sony. After Acid Jazz died out, they were simply considered a disco band, and thats what they are. They are too shallow and synthetic for real funk. Sure, they got their funky moments, so has Prince, but Prince isnt considered a Funk musician although he got more funk than Jamiroquai.
