Well, I was joking.
You seemed to be so enthusiast about them that I thought saying they were OK would get you mad (a Rocky Horror wink) I was more into pop rock and techno at their time (Eurythmics, PSB, Depeche Mode ...) so they sounded quite dark to me. It was later in the 90's (when they released a 2 CD compilation )that I got to like them.

That's strange cuz I find the first four Eurythmics albums and all but the first Depeche Mode album to be much darker than The Smiths.

And yes, they were a brilliant band. I wish Morrissey would do something. At least tour.

Morrissey toured the US last year. I caught one of his shows. It was ok. He played a few new songs - "First Of The Gang To Die", which was great, then "Mexico", "The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores" and "I Like You", all of which were boring. He's got a new album out in the UK early next year.

Yes, I've noticed most Americans classify European bright pop as Alternative, especially 80's techno-pop (New Order, Erasure, Pet Shop Boys,Depeche Mode, Eurythmics...)

Morrissey recently got a new record deal & is in the studio at the moment working on the new album. I think it's supposed to be released in the Spring of next year. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

They were the group that defined my miserable times. Last year I was goin thru some personal sh**. In fact 2002 was one of the worst years I've ever experienced in my life. But it was the music of The Smiths that carried me through it. I think Morrissey really understood where I was coming from. And he doesn't even know me. The Cure is definitely better but The Smiths are great too. And who cares if they're gay. What does that have to do with great music?

The Cure and The Smiths are equally good to me. Maybe you think that because The Cure has produced more, but it's all good. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

No, not really. Because I like Joy Division more than either one and they have less than The Smiths. I just like The Cure's guitar style and moodiness. And Robert Smith's voice I really connect with. It's strange, because Joy Division and The Cure are much darker and creepier than The Smiths, but I can listen to them a lot more. When I listen to The Smiths, it makes me very happy for a couple weeks but then something happens every time. I get emotionally numb and can't listen to them for a long time.

But don't let this take away from the subject of the thread. I don't want to turn this into a Cure vs. Smiths thing. The Smiths were great and totally had their own thing going on. There's nobody else like them.

Yes, please I don't want to turn this into one of those heated debates, like the one I began about Jamiroquai.
Anyways, I wanna say something else about The Smiths. I was playing the Meat is Murder album when my Grandfather and I were driving out of town. He's never heard of them so I thought, "he's either gonna think it's interesting or he's gonna think it sucks". So after listening he was wondering, "where's the Blues in this music"? And I'm like, "it's not blues, it's alternative rock". Now, mind you, my Grandfather is a legendary, well respected Jazz musician (I won't mention his name here) so he has every right to criticize. So he goes on to say that "this music isn't gonna last, especially if it doesn't have any Blues in it". But I'm like, "It doesn't necessarily have to have any Blues for it to sound great". And then he thought that the band had no sort of credibility, and I'm like "they've sold millions of records around the world and have been one of the most influential rock bands even after their break-up." But he still sticks to his word. What's your word on that? NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

It's time for new direction. It's time for jazz to die. And blues too. Good riddance.

It's time for new direction. It's time for jazz to die. And blues too. Good riddance. Well I wouldn't come to that conclusion. I like Jazz and I like Blues too, but I just think those styles can co-exist with Alternative Rock as well. I don't know, maybe there's just a difference in understanding between my generation and my Grandad's. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

I don't know, maybe there's just a difference in understanding between my generation and my Grandad's. I like a lot of jazz too. Not big on blues really. It's like how jazz was considered dangerous at one point. And then Rock 'N' Roll was the devil's music. Then punk was a big deal. And now rap seems to be the scapegoat. People fear what they don't understand, and unless you're flexible, you cling to the past.

Hell yeah, The Smiths were so good! Didn't Prince and Morrissey once hint about working together, or Morrissey went to paisley park or something? saw morrissey live last year, never seen someone control a crowd like him ever “If I can shoot rabbits/then I can shoot fascists”

Prince was waiting for him at some grammys in LA but Mozz didn't come, he was ill then -
and when you want to live how do you start? where do you go? who do you need to know?
